“OfcourseitwasimpossibletoconnectthedotslookingforwardwhenIwasincollege.Butitwasvery,veryclearlookingbackwardstenyearslater.Again,youcantconnectthedotslookingforward;youcanonlyconnectthemlookingbackwards.”WhenIwatchedthevideoofSteveJobs’CommencementAddressatStanfordUniversityforthefirsttime,Ifailedtoacquireanexactunderstandingofthefigurativemeaningofthedotsinourlives,butnow,fouryearslater,whenIlookback,amapofdotswithlinesconnectingthemgradually,andyetclearly,appearsinmymind-andthenextdotisnamed“GraduateStudyinSocialandAdministrativeSciencesinPharmacyatUniversityofWisconsin-Madison.”

Thefirstdotisaboutmygrandma’schoiceoftreatmentofherlivercancer.Istillrememberwhenshewasdying,tearsslidingdownherwrinkledcheeks,shemurmured“Ishouldhavechosenconservativetreatmenttodiepeacefullyinbed?Ishouldhave?”Thatunforgettablememorystilllingersonmymindandkeepsmereflectingonmethodsofguidingpatientstomakebetterdecisions,andevaluatingthehealthrelatedqualityoflife.Therefore,IdeterminedtominorinPharmacy,toexplorethepharmaceuticalfieldfurther-andthisledpreciselytotheseconddotonmyjourney.

Inthesecondyearofmycollegelife,IbeganmyminorcoursesinPharmacy-afantasticworldofscience,andgraduallyIhaveacquiredathoroughknowledgeofPharmacy.BasedonthestudyofPharmacology,IstartedtolearnPharmacotherapybymyself,andprogressivelygottoknowthecorrespondingmedicationtherapiestotreatandpreventeachkindofdiseases,andrealizedtheimportanceofsafe,appropriateandeconomicaldrugtherapyforachievingoutcomesthatimproveapatient’squalityoflife.Duringthisexploring,Iencounteredanothersubject-SocialandAdministrativeSciencesinPharmacy.

Lateron,alecturecalled“ComparisonStudyofEducationinSocialandAdministrativeSciencesinPharmacyinChinaandUSA”solidifiedmyinterestinthisdiscipline.Withtheguidanceofthelecturer,ProfessorHU,andthroughsearchinginformationaboutthisarea,Iformulatedaclearvisionofthepurposeofresearchinthisdiscipline-toimprovetheuseofpharmaceuticalproductsandservices,fosterthedeliveryofpharmaceuticalcare,andshapethehealthsystemappropriately,throughapplyinginterdisciplinarytheories.Exultantly,my

undiscoveredpassionforthisfieldwasignited.Consideringmypersonality,lifeexperienceandsocialconscience,IhavenodoubtthatSocialandAdministrativeSciencesinPharmacyistherightprospectiveresearchareaforme.IresolvetopursuemygraduatestudyinthisareaintheUnitedStates-thisisthethirdandoneofthemostcrucialdotsontherouteofmyadventurousvoyage.

EversinceImademydecision,IhavepreparedmygraduatestudyintheUnitedStatesdotbydot.ImanagedtodevelopmyinterestinthisdisciplinewithoutweakeningmyperformanceofmymajorEnglish,andparticipationinvariouactivities.IrankedfirstintheoverallperformanceofmymajorandminorinPharmacy,andwontheNationalScholarship.Withregardstoactivitiesandvolunteerworks,studentleaderforums,Englishclubandsummersocialpracticeactivitiescultivatedmystrongleadershipandorganizationskills;additionally,debateandspeechcompetitions,andvolunteerexperiencedevelopedmycommunicationandpresentationskills,whicharemyassetsthatwilllargelybenefitmyfuturestudyandcareerdevelopment,aswellasthegraduateprograminwhichIwillgetenrolled.

Atthesametime,PharmacoeconomicscourseandrelatedliteraturehavebroadenedmyinsightintoSocialandAdministrativeSciencesinPharmacy.Throughouttheprocess,Idevelopedconsiderableliteratureretrievalskillsandsharpabilitiestograspnewconceptsandknowledgequickly.Also,throughinvolvingintheOpenExperimentintheEnzymeEngineeringLaboratory,Ilearnedtobeanexcellentcoordinator,buildingabridgebetweenteachersandotherresearchteammates.FromMarchthisyear,IhavetakenanactivepartintheresearchprojectonComparisonStudyofChineseGMP2022andGMP1998.DuringthisresearchIsharpenedmyanalyticalabilities,criticalthinkingskills,aswellasbuiltstrongteamspirit.IwillassisttheresearchadvisorProfessorHUtodeliveraseriesoflecturesinouruniversityandpharmaceuticalcompanies.Duringmycolorfulcollegelife,Ihavemadeasubstantialnumberofpresentationsatclass,departmentandschoollevels.Andasoneofthebeststudents,Ihaveparticipatedinstudymethodseminarsformanytimestoinstructfreshmenandsophomoresinlearningandresearching.Therefore,IhavetheconfidencetosaythatIwillbequalifiedforteachingorresearchassistantshipinmygraduatestudy.BecauseoftheaforementionedskillsandknowledgeIgained,thismonthIamparticipatingintheresearchprojectthePharmacoeconomicEvaluationofDiabetesinChina,whichwillpavethewayformygraduateresearch.

ThefurtherIexploredinthisarea,themoreclearlyIrealizedthedireneedfortalentsspecializedinSocialandAdministrativeSciencesinPharmacy-Ihopetobecomeoneofthem,tobeinamarketingleadershippositioninordertopushChinesepharmaceuticalenterprisestobecomeglobalplayers-thiswillcertainlybeadotonmylifeexpedition.
