Washington,D.C.,cityanddistrict,capitaloftheUnitedStatesofAmerica.ThecityofWashingtonhasthesameboundariesastheDistrictofColumbia(D.C.),afederalterritoryestablishedin1790asthesiteofthenewnation’spermanentcapital.NamedafterthefirstU.S.presidentGeorgeWashington,thecityhasservedsince1800astheseatoffederalgovernment.Itisalsotheheartofadynamicmetropolitanregion.Duringthe20thcentury,theWashington,D.C.,metropolitanareagrewrapidlyastheresponsibilitiesofnationalgovernmentincreased,bothathomeandthroughouttheworld.BuilderslaidthecornerstonefortheUnitedStatesCapitolin1793,andthebuildinghasbeentheseatofthecountry’sSenateandtheHouseofRepresentativessince1800.Sinceitsoriginalconstruction,theCapitolbuildinghasbeenexpandedtomorethantwiceitsoriginalsize.TheRotundastands66m(180ft)highandisthesymboliccenterofbothCapitolHillandWashington,D.C.

AfireballeruptsfromthesouthtoweroftheWorldTradeCenterinNewYorkCityafterahijackedpassengerjetcrashedintoitonSeptember11,2001.Anotherhijackedjethadcrashedintothenorthtowerabout15minutesearlier.Bothofthe110-storyskyscraperssooncollapsedcompletely.HijackerscrashedathirdplaneintothePentagoninArlington,Virginia,andafourthhijackedplanecrashedinPennsylvania.Theterroristattacks,whichkilledabout3,000people,werethedeadliestinUnitedStateshistory.
