BandVUnitOne形成性練習(xí)5-TRFDirection:Inthispart,youwillhave15minutestogooverapassagequicklyandthenreadtenstatementsfollowingit.Forstatements1-10,writeT(forTrue)ifthestatementagreeswiththeinformationgiveninthepassage;F(forFalse)ifthestatementcontradictstheinformationgiveninthepassage;N(forNotGiven)ifthestatementisnotgiveninthepassage.AWalkthroughCambridgeUniversitySometimesitappearsthateverytowninBritainhasatleasthalfadozenghosts.Ifitisn*tmurdervictims,thenit*sladiesingrayappearingatmidnight.Cambridgeisdifferent,however,asthisuniversitycityisfillednotwithspiritsbutwiththespiritoftherealpeoplewhohavelivedthereoverthecenturies.Theplaceisfilledbythem.AtthelastcountCambridgehadgiventheworld62NobelPrize-winners:TrinityCollege(二一學(xué)院)alonehasproduced28ofthem.Therehavebeen13Britishprimeministersand9leadersoftheChurchofEngland(英國國教會(huì)).Greatscientistsofthepast,suchasDarwinandNewton,havegivenwaytomodernthinkers,suchasCrickandWatson,whodiscoveredDNA(脫氧核糖核酸).ThrowinmanymorefamouspoetsandphilosophersandsoonyoumayrealizetherichnessandvarietythathaspermeatedCambridgelife.ThevirtueofCambridgeisthatithasasmallcenter,whichmeansthatmostplacescanbereachedeasilyonfoot.Takeanopen-bustourifyouwish,oranofficialguidedwalk,butit'sjustasmuchfuntodoityourselfandallowtimetosoakuptheatmosphereasyouwanderthroughthecolleges,sitinthegardens,andvisitthesmallchurchesandpubs.IfyouwalkfromthetouristinformationcenterdownBene't(shortforBenedict)Street(本尼特大街),andlooktoyourleftyouwillseetheCavendishLaboratory(卡文迪什實(shí)驗(yàn)室).Itmaynotlooklikeanythingspecialfromtheoutsidebutitwasinsidethosewallsthattheatomwasfirstsplitin1932,andwhereFrancisCrickandJamesDeweyWatsonfinallysolvedthemysteryofDNAin1953,workforwhichtheyreceivedaNobelPrizenineyearslater.Howstrange,yetappropriateforCambridge,thatsuchpioneeringworktookplaceinthehistoricshadeofStBene't'sChurch(圣本尼特教堂),whosetowerdatesfromabout1025,thechurchitselfbeingtheoldestbuildinginthecounty.Insideitisamixofancientandmodem.TakealookatthemodernstatueofJesus(耶穌)thatcontrastswiththeancientpillarsdatingfromabout1300.IfyouturnleftattheendofBene'tStreetyouwillseeHobson'sConduit(霍布森水渠).ThechannelsthatrunalongsidethestreetarecalledbythisnameasitwasthephilosopherHobsonwhoprovidedmoneytoa17th-centuryschemetobringfreshwatertoCambridgethisway.ThescaleofCambridge'shistoryisoftenbroughthometoyouinawaythatcanmakeyouonlyshakeyourheadinwonder.Hobson'sConduitrunsoutsidetheentrancetoPembrokeCollegethatwasfoundedin1347,andsowasalmost400yearsoldbythetimetheConduitwasbuilt.ThegatehousethatleadsintothefirstcourtyardistheoldestoneinCambridge;totheright,andattheendofapassageistheentrancetoPembrokeChapel(彭布羅克禮拜堂).Builtin1663—1665,thiswasthefirstclassicalstylebuildinginCambridgeandthefirstmajorarchitecturalworkbySirChristopherWren,whowentontodesignmanypublicbuildingsinLondon.Cambridge*sfirstcollegewasPeterhouse(彼得豪斯學(xué)院),foundedin1284andlocatedalmostoppositePembroke.OnestudentwhomovedfromPeterhousetoPembrokewasthepoetThomasGray(托馬斯?格宙),bestknownforhisElegyWritteninaCountryChurchyard(《寫于鄉(xiāng)間墓地的挽歌》).Heregardedmostoftheotherstudentsthereasdrunksandhadaropefittedoutsidethewindowofhisrooms,whichhebelievedtobeatriskfromfire.Hisfellowstudentswouldshout"Fire!”sooftenoutsidehiswindowthatheeventuallymovedacrosstheroadtoPembroke.In1757,herefusedtheinvitationtobecometheofficialpoetofEngland,butstayedinCambridgetobecomeaprofessorofhistoryandmodemlanguagesin1768.PeterhouseChapel(彼得豪斯ネ1拜堂)hasaninterestinghistory.Itwasbuiltin1628butthenseriouslydamagedbyCromwell's(克倫威爾)troopsinthe1650's,duringtheirfighttoeliminatetheKingandformarepublic.ItsstainedglassofeastwindowwashiddentoprotectitfromCromwell'ssoldiers,butwasputbackin1660afteranewkingcametopower.Itsurvivesinonepiece,over300yearslater.AcuriouscomparisoniswiththefateofOliverCromwell'shead,overthesame300years.Cromwelldiedin1658;afterhisdeaththenewkinghadCromwelldugup,hungandbeheaded.Thekingwasobviouslytakingnochancesonhimcomingback.Hisbodywasburiedagainandhisheadhungonapole,whereitstayedforthenexttwentyyears.Itblewoffinastormandamantookithome;onecanonlyimaginethestateofthis"treasure".Theheadproceededtopassthroughvarioushandsuntilin1960,exactly300yearslater,theheadwassecretlyburiedsomewhereinSidneySussexCollege(西德尼?薩賽克斯學(xué)院),onSidneyStreet(西德尼大街),whichOliverCromwellhadattended.Thesecrecywasnecessaryasitwasfeltthatmoderndefendersofthecrownmightstilltrytostealtheheadanddestroyit.Asignoutsidetheentrancetothechapelbearswitnesstotheevent.Aftersuchaviolenttaleyoumaywanttoretiretothemorepeacefulretreatofoneofthecollegegardens,suchasatChrist'sCollege(基督學(xué)院).PassthroughthegatewayandlooktothelefttoseetheentrancetotheroomsinwhichJohnMilton(約翰?彌爾頓)stayedwhenhewasastudenthereintheearly17thcentury,whileinthemiddleofthewallontherightarethestairswhichleadtotheroomsoccupiedbyCharlesDarwin200yearslater.ParadiseLost(《失樂園》)ononeside,TheOriginofSpecies(《物種起源》)ontheother.WalkpastDarwin'sstairstothesecondcourt,andbeyondthattotheFellows'Garden(教エ花園),adelightfulretreat.Takeaseatinthegardenandlookaroun ,somepeoplecomplainthattherearenotenoughkeenyoungpeoplearoundtofilltheplacesavailable.Inpractice,youngpeople,eveniftheycan'tbringexperience,donotoftenremainignorantinmatterstheycareabout.Andinprivateatleast,olderoneswhohavedealtwiththemoncommitteestendtopraisethehonestythattheybring.Lessconcernedwithorunawareofpolitics,theyoftenforcesensitiveissuesoutintotheopen.Yetwithoutsupport,a16-year-oldcaneasilygetlostinacommitteeofpeopleintheir40s.Iftheadultsarebringinghimorheronboardreluctantlyorasasymbol,theexercisemayendwithbothsidesfrustrated.And,withayearlychangeinmanypositions,youthopinioncanseemhighlyvariable,alteringsuddenlyasonerepresentativereplacesanother.Forallthedifficulties,youthinvolvementlookssettogrow.TheUnitedNationshasagreedtoincludeyoungpeopleinthepreparationsforitsspecialsessiononchildrenin2001,andmayincludetheminthesessionitself."Sowhat?"onecanask:thismaynotmattermuch.Butthesignsarethatthesameisgoingtohappeninmoreplacesthatdomatter,atlevelsofnational,provincial,orlocalgovernment.Youngpeople,sayactivists,arenotonlytheleadersoftomorrow;increasinglytheyaretheleadersoftoday.Statements:Tomanyactivists,youngpeoplearetheleadersoftomorrowandtoday.In1950sand1960s,youngpeopledominatedtheprotestagainstglobaltrade.The“signofchangeninparagraph5meansthatyoungpeoplearebeingaskedtoparticipateindecision-makingaffairs.Manyeldersdonotwantyoungpeopletomakepolicybecausetheythinktheyareeithertoosophisticatedortooinexperienced.Inmanyschoolsanduniversities,studentsaremoreandmoreinvolvedindecision-making.Youthcouncilsandyouthrepresentationdoesnotworkeffectively.StudentsinOntarioareinvolvedinallsortsofissuesrangingfromprovincialissuestohiringandfiringofthestaffs.Imperfectdemocracyleadstosomeproblemsinselectingyoungpeopleasrepresentatives.Theadvantagesofhavingyoungpeopleoncommitteesaretheyarehonestandareabletoforcesensitiveissuesoutintotheopen.Theauthor'sattitudetowardstheyouthinvolvementindecision-makingaffairsisnegative.Key:
