her

novels

are

morepopular

than

several

recently

adapted

asHollywood

movies.

But

we

do

not

have

many

records

ofwhat

she

looked

like.

For

a

long

time,

the

onlyacceptedimage

of

Austen

was

an

amateur

sketch

of

an

adultAusten

made

by

her

sister

Cassandra.

However

recentlya

professionally

painted,

full-length

portrait

of

a

teenagegirl

owned

by

a

member

of

the

Austen

familyhas

comeup

for

sale.

Although

the

professional

painting

is

nottitled

Jane

Austen,

there

are

good

reasons

to

believe

sheis

the

subject.Main

use

the

was

painted,

was

sold

by

aman

named

William

Legg.

Record

showed

thatWilliam

Legg

did

not

sell

canvases

in

Londonwhen

Jane

Austen

teenager.

He

onlystarted

selling

canvases

when

she

was

27

yearsold.

So,

it

looks

like

the

canvas

was

used

for

thepainting

at

a

time

when

Austen

was

clearly

olderthan

the

girl

in

the

members

have

actually

seen

theAusten

themselves.

The

lecture

contradicts

towhat

reading

passage

indicates.Besides,

the

listening

material

refutes

theviewpoint

showed

in

the

reading

passage

thatthe

face

in

the

portrait

was

strongly

resemblethe

one

in

Cassandra's

sketch,

by

saying

that

the

portray

may

be

drew

the

relatives

of

theAustin's

descendent.

He

argues

that

the

Austen'sfamily

is

very

large,

and

some

scientists

pointout

that

it

may

be

portrayed

one

of

the

relativesof

Austin

at

the

teenager’s

age

right

now.

This

isanother

part

where

the

lecture

casts

doubt

onthe

reading.Finally,

the

reading

makes

the

point

that

thestyle

of

the

paint

is

likely

to

be

Ozias

Humphery,who

was

at

high

possibility

hired

by

the

wealthyAusten

family

as

painter.
