2022–2023SalaryBudgetSurveyYourbestresourceforthe2022budgetingseasonhasarrived.OurSalaryBudgetSurveyfeaturesinsightfulanalysissourceddirectlyfromcompensationprofessionalsbrokenoutacrosskeyfirmographicandgeographicsegments.Informhowyoubuildoutyourcompensationbudgetincelebrateddetail,withplannedsalaryincreasebudgets,salarystructureadjustments,andpromotionincreaseslaidoutforeachtypeofemployee.Acompensationstrategybuiltondatadrivendecisionswillensureyoudon’tfallbehindinsecuringandretainingtalentinavolatileeconomy.Withtrusteddataandinsights,Payscaleisheretohelpyougetpayright.CompensationTrends&Data-drivenInsightsAsthe2022budgetingseasonquicklyapproaches,HRandcompensationprofessionalsmustnarrowinontheirsalaryincreasestrategiesforthecomingyear.Labormarketconditionsin2022,suchashistoricinflationandunprecedentedturnover,havehaddizzyingimpactsonthecostoflabor.Lookingaheadto2023,thethreatofrecessionnowlooms.Projectingsalaryincreasebudgetsforthenextyearmayfeellikeadauntingtask,butthedataandinsightsfromthe2022-2023SalaryBudgetSurveycanhelpinformyourtalentstrategiesatacriticaltimeinthemarket.Ifonethingisclearinthelargercompensationcommunity,itisthatsalariesareincreasingathigherrates.Whenputupagainstaninflationratethatsitsata40-yearhighandacompetitivelabormarketswellingwithalluringjoboffers,theoncetypical2-3percentincreasewilllikelyfeellacklustertomanyemployees.IntheU.S.,respondentsreportonaverageaplannedbasesalaryincreaseof3.8percentin2023.Amongsomeindustriesandfirmographicsegments,basesalaryincreasesreportedbyrespondentsmaysurpass4.5oreven5percentfortheiremployees.These2023projectionsfollowsimilarincreasetrendsfrom2022,wheretheaverageoverallincreasecameinat3.6percentandsurpassed5percentinsomesegments.

Allinall,thedatafromthe2022-2023SalaryBudgetSurveyresultsshowsaclearresponsetothelabormarketconditionsofthelastyear.Exactlyone-halfofU.S.organizationsexpecttoincreasetheirsalarybudgetsgoinginto2023.Thetopreasongivenforhigherbudgetincreasesin2023,by85percentofrespondents,iscompetitionforlabor.Overthelastyear,increasedturnoverhasworsenedthepainsoflaborcompetition.Retainingemployeeswillrequireacknowledgingculturalshiftstowardsremotework,anticipatingeconomicpressuresfrominflation,andleveragingcompetitivepaypackages.In2022,84percentofnon-exemptworkers,exemptnon-managementemployees,andmanagersweregivenbasesalaryincreases.Incomparison,just55percentofmanagersreceivedbasepayincreasesin2021.Compensationprofessionalsenteracriticalmomentinthelabormarketwherecompoundingfactorsofinflation,laborcompetition,andturnovernowcometobearagainstgrowingconcernsofanimpendingrecessionandstockmarketdeclines.Tobeeffective,compensationstrategiesmustfostertalentretentionbymeetingemployeeexpectationswithoutupsettingbudgetarylimitsandthebottom-line.Payscale’sSalaryBudgetSurveyisakeydataresourcetohelpyougetpayright.2022–2023PayscaleSalaryBudgetSurvey
