7InauguralAddressMemorablewoNotallinauguralspeecheshavebeenasuccess.MartinVanBurenwasovershadowedbytheoutgoingPresidentAndrewJackson,andthecrowdbarelylistenedtohim.FranklinPierce,in1853,triedinvaintomakehimselfheardaboveahowlingsnowstorm.RutherfordB.Hayes,winnerofthedisputedelectionof1876,hadtoendureboos,catcalls,andassassinationthreats.NotallinauguralspeecheshaSomepresidentscontributedpersonaltouchestotheceremony.Washingtonaddedtoohisoath“sohelpmeGod”,andkissedtheBible.In1905,TheodoreRooseveltworearingcontainingalockofhaircutfromLincoln’sheadafterhewasshot.In1937,FranklinD.RooseveltrodebareheadeddownPennsylvaniaAvenueinanopencar,sharingthedrivingrainwiththespectators.SomepresidentscontributedpeInAmericanhistory,GeorgeWashington’ssecondaddresswastheshortest(135words)andWilliamHenryHarrisondeliveredthelongest(8495words).InAmericanhistory,GeorgeWaMonday,March4,1793FellowCitizens:

werealreadyindependentnations.Significantchangeswereusheredin,buttheywerenotbreathtaking.What
happenedwasacceleratedevolutionratherthanoutrightrevolution.Duringtheconflictitselfpeoplewentonworkingandpraying,marryingandplaying.Mostofthemwerenotseriouslydisturbedbytheactualfighting,andmanyofthemoreisolatedcommunitiesscarcelyknewthatawarwason.
TheFirstAmericanRevolutionTThefirstshotsoftheAmericanRevolutionwerefired
inLexington,Massachusetts,onApril19,1775.ThefirstshotsoftheATheDeclarationofIndependenceonJuly4,1776,establishedanewnationandtransformedalimitedrevolttosecurerightswithintheBritishempireintoafar-reachingone,aimedatcompleteindependencefromBritishcontrol.SincethekingandhisministershaddeterminedtorestoreBritishrule,theAmericansnowfacedalong,hardstruggleforindependencerequiringasustainednationaleffortsuchastheyhadnotexpectedin1775.
TheDeclarationofIndependencColdWarPostwarEstrangementTheWesterndemocraciesandtheSovietUniondiscussedtheprogressofWorldWarIIandthenatureofthepostwarsettlementatconferencesinTehran(1943),Yalta(February1945),andPotsdam(July-August1945).Afterthewar,disputesbetweentheSovietUnionandtheWesterndemocracies,particularlyovertheSoviettakeoverofEastEuropeanstates,ledWinstonChurchilltowarnin1946thatan"ironcurtain"wasdescendingthroughthemiddleofEurope.Forhispart,JosephStalindeepenedtheestrangementbetweentheUnitedStatesandtheSovietUnionwhenheassertedin1946thatWorldWarIIwasanunavoidableandinevitableconsequenceof"capitalistimperialism"andimpliedthatsuchawarmightreoccur.TheColdWarwasaperiodofEast-Westcompetition,tension,andconflictshortoffull-scalewar,characterizedbymutualperceptionsofhostileintentionbetweenmilitary-politicalalliancesorblocs.Therewererealwars,sometimescalled"proxywars"becausetheywerefoughtbySovietalliesratherthantheUSSRitself--alongwithcompetitionforinfluenceintheThirdWorld,andamajorsuperpower
armsrace.ColdWarPostwarEstrangementColdWarSovietPerspectivesAfterWorldWarII,JosephStalinsawtheworldasdividedintotwocamps:imperialistandcapitalistregimesontheonehand,andtheCommunistandprogressiveworldontheother.In1947,PresidentHarryTrumanalsospokeoftwodiametricallyopposedsystems:onefree,andtheotherbentonsubjugatingothernations.AfterStalin'sdeath,NikitaKhrushchevstatedin1956thatimperialismandcapitalismcouldcoexistwithoutwarbecausetheCommunistsystemhadbecomestronger.TheGenevaSummitof1955amongBritain,France,theSovietUnion,andtheUnitedStates,andtheCampDavidSummitof1959betweenEisenhowerandKhrushchevraisedhopesofamorecooperativespiritbetweenEastandWest.In1963theUnitedStatesandtheSovietUnionsignedsomeconfidence-buildingagreements,andin1967PresidentLyndonJohnsonmetwithSovietPrimeMinisterAlekseiKosygininGlassboro,NewJersey.Interspersedwithsuchmovestowardcooperation,however,werehostileactsthatthreatenedbroaderconflict,suchastheCubanmissilecrisisofOctober1962andtheSoviet-ledinvasionofCzechoslovakiaof1968.ColdWarSovietPerspectivescausesoftheColdWarThecausesoftheColdWararerelativelysimplewhenbrokendownintosmallpiecesasessentiallyitwasa'war'betweentwodifferentideologies.*Americanfearofcommunistattack*Truman’sdislikeofStalin*Russia’sfearoftheAmerican'satomicbomb

TheAmericanpoliticalsystemisaclassicalexampleofthetwo-partysystem.Whenwesaythatwehaveatwo-partysystemintheUnitedStateswedonotmeanthatwehaveonlytwoparties.Usuallyaboutadozenpartiesnominatepresidentialcandidates.Wecallitatwo-partysystembecausewehavetwolargepartiesandanumberofsmallparties,andthelargepartiesaresolargethatweoftenforgetabouttherest.Usuallythesmallpartiescollectivelypolllessthan5percentofthevotecastinnationalelections.
ThedemocraticandRepublicanpartiesarethelargestandmostcompetitiveorganizationsintheAmericancommunity.Theorganizetheelectorateverysimplybymaintainingthetwo-partysystem.AmericansalmostinevitablybecomeDemocratsorRepublicansbecausethereisusuallynootherplaceforthemgoto.Moreover,becausetherivalryofthesepartiesisveryold,mostAmericansknowwheretheybelonginthesystem.Asaconsequenceofthedominanceofthemajorparties,mostelectedofficialsareeitherRepublicansorDemocrats.Attemptstobreakupthisoldsystemhavebeenmadeineverypresidentialelectioninthepastonehundredyears,butthesystemhassurvivedallassaults.
