ernmentformonths.Buttherearevaryinglevelsofagreementonhowmanyconcessionstomake.AndnotallofthepublishersarenegotiatingwiththeJusticeDepartment.AllfivedeclinedtocommentpubliclyonThereisgeneralagreementamongthem,however,thatitisvitallyimportanttoretainthecurrentmodel,whichallowspublisherstosettheirownpricesfore-booksastheyfaceanaggressivechallengefromAmazoninthebookmarket.Onepublishingexecutivewithknowledgeofthesituation,whoinsistedonanonymitysoasnottoupsetcontinuingnegotiations,saidthatinvestigatorshadexpressedinterestinfindingwaystoexpandthecurrentsystem,knownastheagencymodel,andnotdiscarditentirely.Ifthatsystemweretodisappear,itwouldbegoodnewstoAmazon,saidMikeShatzkin,chiefexecutiveoftheIdeaLogicalCompany,whichadvisesbookpublishersondigitalchange,addingthatitwouldbe“essentiallybadnewsforjustabouteverybodyelseinthebookbusiness.”“Ultimay,thatwouldmeanthatthepriceofbooksisgoingtocomedownandtheamountofmoneythatauthorscanearnisgoingtocomedown,”Mr.ShatzkinAnynewlimitsonagencypricingcouldalsobenefittheconsumer,however,ifitallowedAmazontoofferlowerpricesfore-booksagain.InDecember,SharisA.Pozen,theactingdirectoroftheJusticeDepartment’santitrustdivision,confirmedtoaHouse mitteethatthedepartmentwasinvestigatingtheelectronicbookindustry.Ms.PozenalsosaidthattheEuropeanCommissionandstateattorneysgeneralwerelookingintothematter.Adayearlier,onDec.6,thecompetitioncommitteeoftheEuropeanUnionsaidthatitwasconductinganinvestigationofAppleandfivepublishersoverwhethertheyhadmadeillegalagreementstorestrictpricingone-books.TheJusticeDepartmentlaunchedtheinvestigationtherequestofthepressurefromtheEuropeanthedisagreementamongelectronicbookthepricingcollusionbetweenAppleande-bookAccordingtothetext,thecurrentbookbusinessseemstohaveproblemswithpricingsalesbooktechnicalAccordingtoMikeShatzkin,ifthecurrentsalessystemtheauthors erscreatesamoredynamicandfluidorder.Foramateursdon’tsufferfromthehierarchyandexclusionofalltheself-importantprofessions,frommedicinetoarchitecturetoacademia.
