Foreword

Whocouldhavepredictedthedramaticturnofeventsthathaveunfoldedoverthecourseof2020?

WhenIsatdowntowritelastyear’sforeword,forourthirdandfinalSmarterDigitalCitywhitepaper,IanticipatedcontinuedimprovementofHongKong’sdigitaleconomy,andarelativeaccelerationofdigitaltransformationacrossthecity.However,

theteamandIdidnotanticipatethattechnologywouldbecomesuchalifelineformillions,andthatdigitalwouldrisetothetopoftheprioritylistforalmosteverybusinessacrosstheglobe,includingthosehereinHongKong.

COVID-19hasaffectedeveryelementofbusiness,fromfinancialmarketstosupplychainstocustomerdemand,rapidlyacceleratingtheadoptionofdigitalsolutionsthroughnecessityratherthanstrategy.

WhenthepandemichaspassedwhatlegacywillrapidtechnologyadoptionleaveforHongKong?Forcertain,wehaveproventhatstudyingandworkingfromhomeisaviablealternativetoclassroomsandoffices.However,asschoolsandbusinessesslowlyresumenormaldailyoperationsoverthecomingweeksandmonths,newonlinehabitshaveemergedthatbusinessandgovernmentagencieswillneedtoadaptto.

Asustaineddigitaltransformationshouldmeanmorethanjustequippingyouremployeestoworkfromhome.Itshouldmeanadaptingtonewconsumermindsets,andcustomerswhonowwanttobeassuredthatyourproductsandservicesarecleanandcontactless,convenientandconnected.

Thistimelynewreport,AIforEveryone,commissionedbyGoogleandconductedbyKPMG,outlineshowrealisingthebenefitsofAIamongHongKongersandHongKongbusinesseswillassistthecity’srecoverypostCOVID-19.Artificialintelligence(AI)isalreadyembeddedinmanybusinessproductivitytools(suchasvideoconferencing,smartassistantsandchatbots)anddigitalmarketingplatforms(suchasSearch,YouTubeandAnalytics),whichhavebeenwidelyadoptedbyenterprisesinHongKong.

AIcanhelpbusinessestomitigaterisks,improveefficiency,enhanceproductsandservices,anddeliverexperiencesthatalignwithchangingcustomerrequirements.However,Small-MediumBusinesses(SMBs)stillneedsupportonthejourneytodigitalisation.Thisthemeisechoedinthisyear’sresearchwhichshowsthatSMBsareinparticularneedofhelpinvisualisingthebenefitsofAI.

From2017through2019,GoogleHongKong’sannualSmarterDigitalCity1researchexploredthemesandprovidedrecommendationsrelatingtothequestion:“HowcanHongKongbecomeaSmarterDigitalCity?”

IntheSmarterDigitalCityprogramthetopicofartificialintelligence(AI)andmachinelearningcametothefore.Overthecourseofthreeyears,weobservedasignificantincreaseinthenumberoflargerbusinessesinHongKonginterestedinapplyingAIandmachinelearning,aswellasasizeableproportionofHongKongresidentskeentolearnmoreaboutAIandmachine-learningtechnologies.

Artificialintelligence(AI)isthesimulationofhumanintelligenceprocessesbymachines,especiallycomputersystems.AIhasgreatpotentialtoempowerpeopleforgenerationsandservethecommongood.

Asweenteranewdecade,AIremainstopofmindforpolicymakers,businessesandindividuals,withCOVID-19acceleratingeveryone’sadoptionofdigitalisation.Nowmorethanever,thepracticalusefulnessoftechnologyandinnovationisapparent.AIprovidesnewwaysofapproachingproblemsandmeaningfullyimprovesmanyfacetsofpeople’slives,fromhelpingmitigatetheimpactofnaturaldisasters,toprotectinghabitatsandimprovinghealthcare.2Italsoenablesorganisationstooperatemoreefficientlywhiledeliveringbetterproductsandservicestotheircustomers.AIwillhelpbusinessesofallkindsandsizesbemoreinnovativeandefficient.AsuccessfulembraceofAIisessentialtoensureHongKongupholdsitscompetitivenessandremainsamagnetforindustry,investmentandtalent.

RecentresearchhasrevealedthatHongKonglagsbehindotherAPACeconomiesintermsofAIreadiness.3

In2020,GoogleHongKongembarkedonanewthree-yearprogramoflongitudinalresearchdelvingspecificallyintothetopicofAIdevelopmentadoptioninHongKong,buildingonthreeyearsofSmarterDigitalCityresearch.ThiswhitepapercoversthefirstwaveofthisSmarter

DigitalCity-AIforEveryoneprogram,whichwasconductedinMaythroughJune2020.Inthefirstyear,thisprogramaimsto:

Ifthepastyearhastaughtusanything,itisthatdisruptioncanhithard,forceustoasktoughquestionsanddrasticallyalterhowwedobusinessandliveourlives.COVID-19laidbaretheneedtoembracedigitalinnovationtoadapttocommercialandpersonalheadwinds,regardlessofone’sindustryorlivelihood.

HongKong’sprogressonthistransformationjourneyinrecentyearshadgatheredpace,asourSmarterDigitalCity4researchhasdocumented.NowCOVID-19hasheightenedthesenseofurgencyinHongKong,affectingeveryresidentandbusiness,sparingnobody.What’smore,COVID-19hasspurredmoreresidentstoflocktoonlinechannels,promptingbusinessestoactquicklytomeetnewandevolvingdemands.Inshort,thecasefordigitaltransformationingeneralandAIinparticularhasneverbeenstronger.

OptimisticaboutAI,buteducationisneededtoaccelerateadoption

COVID-19hasspedupdigitalisationanddemandforAIadoption.ThepandemichashighlightedthecriticalrolethatAI-embeddedproductsandservicesplayindailylife,andmadedigitalisationanevenmoreurgentnecessityforthepeopleandbusinessesofHongKong.

HongKongersareoptimisticaboutthepotentialofAItohelppeopleandimprovelives.ThemajorityofHongKongersbelieveAIisapositiveforceforsociety,withonly2percentofresidentsperceivingAIasathreattopeople(suchasthroughjobloss).

HoweverthisoptimismdoesnotyettranslateintohighlevelsofactualusageofAIservices.Theonusisonproviderstoimproveresidents’awarenessofAI’sbenefits.Convenience,efficiencyandcostsavingswillallprovecompelling,particularlyasHongKongersseektomanagetheimpactofCOVID-19ontheirdailylives.

ResidentsarekeentoexperiencewhatAIcanofferandexcitedabouthowitcanimprovetheirlives,butfirstneedreassurancethattheirdatawillbeprotected.AsresidentsbecomemoreknowledgeableaboutthebenefitsofAIandmoretrustingoforganisationstoprotecttheirprivacy,theywillbemoreopentosharingtheirdata.

AIReadinessisthehighestamongpeopleaged25-34,andthereasonisclear:thiscohortisinitsprimecareer-buildingyearswhereprofessionalexperienceandtechnologicalsavvyintersect.

Residentsaged18-24arehighlyfamiliarwithtechnology,buthavenotyetaccruedtheyearsofworkplaceexperience.BuildingknowledgeatschoolaboutAI’spracticalapplicationswillhelpthemlayasolidfoundationtoapplyitintheworkplace.

Thoseaged35-44areatacomparablelevelofreadinessto18-24s,butfordifferentreasons.Theyhaveamassedconsiderableprofessionalexperienceandbeenexposedtothebenefitsoftechnologyintheworkplace.

Incontrast,45-54year-oldsgrewupinamostlyanalogueenvironmentandassucharetypicallyslowertoadoptadvancedtechnologies.Mature(55+)residentscanalsobenefitfromAItomaketheirdailyliveseasier,moreconvenientandmoreefficient.

ResidentsareseducedbyAI’spromise,butlackknowledge

HongKongresidentsalreadyexhibitahighdegreeofConfidenceinAI’sabilitytoimprovelives,seeingfarmorebenefits(54percent)thandisadvantages(7percent).

Usageisalsorelativelyhigh,revealingthatresidentsinHongKongareadoptingAI-poweredproductsandservicestoasubstantialextent.

However,widespreadusageisnotyetfullytranslatingintoSpending,i.e.,directrevenuetoproviders,andasyetsomeresidentsarereluctanttopayforAIservices.

Know-how(AIfamiliarityandknowledge)andSet-up(deviceandcloudusage,andwillingnesstosharedata)tallyrelativelylower.Thesescoresindicateroomforgrowththatcanberemediedinpartbymoreexplicit,ratherthanimplicit,usageofAItechnologies.

ResidentsseethepotentialofAI,buttheyneedtobeconvinced.Theyarehungryforfurtherknowledgeandneedreassurancefromorganisationsthattheirdatawillbeprotected.MoreknowledgeiscorrelatedwithhigheropennesstousingAI,suggestingthathelpingresidentsexpandtheirknowledgeofAIwillincreasetheiradoption.
