theEngIishChanneI.HesaidthatitwouldbepossibIeto
buiIdaplatforminthecentreoftheChanneI.Thisplatform
wouldserveasaportandaraiIwaystation.Thetunnelwould
bewe11-ventilatediftaiIchimneyswerebuiltabove
sea-1eveI.In1860,abetterplanwasputforwardbyan
Englishman,WilliamLow.HesuggestedthatadoubleraiIway
tunnelshouIdbebuilt.Thiswouldsolvetheproblemof
ventiIation,forifatrainenteredthistunnel,itwould
drawinfreshairbehindit.Forty-twoyearslateratunnel
wasactuallybegun.If,atthetime,theBritishhadnot
fearedinvasion,itwouldhavebeencompleted.Recently,
therehasagainbeengreatinterestintheideaofaChannel
Tunnel.Ifitisbuilt,itwillconnectBritaintoEurope
forthefirsttimeinhistory.
