Onceagain,operatorsfromtheNetherlandsandJapanhavedoneextremelywell,butthistimeSouthKorea’soperatorshavealsoproventobeaforcetobereckonedwith.OurSKtelecomusersobservedthefastestaveragedownloadspeeds—anawe-inspiring74.9Mbps—makingitthesoleGlobalWinnerforDownloadSpeedExperienceandhighlightingtheimpressiveimprovementsintheuserexperiencethatcanbeachievedthroughextensiveinvestmentin5G.AlsofromSouthKorea,LGU+isthesoleGlobalWinnerforbothVoiceAppExperienceand4GAvailability.BothoperatorswereeitheraGlobalWinnerorGlobalLeaderacrossfivecategoriesandwereGlobalHighPerformersforVideoExperience.

inthesamewaythatwedowithourcountry-levelreports.Iftheconfidenceintervalsoverlaptheresultisastatisticaltieandwedeclaretwoormoreoperatorstobejointwinners.WehavealsousedconfidenceintervalstodetermineboththeGlobalLeadersandtheGlobalHighPerformers,whicharecomposedofthetop10andtop30scoringoperators(excludingtheGlobalWinner(s)).Theexactnumberofoperatorsinthesecategoriesvaryduetostatisticaltiesbetweenoperators’scores.

Impressively,asmallmajority(53%)ofoperatorsplacedineithertheExcellentorVeryGoodcategoryforVideoExperience,whileonly2%ofoperatorswereincludedinthePoorcategoryforthismeasureofthemobileexperience.
Onceagain,Europeanoperatorsareheavilyrepresentedatthetopoftheglobal
VideoExperiencetable,thistimemakingupeightoutof10GlobalLeaders.

Thisisthefirsttimewehaveassessedoperatorsgloballyformobilegaming.OurinauguraljointGlobalWinnersforGamesExperienceareJapan’sSoftBankandVodafoneNetherlands,withstatisticallytiedscoresof82.9and82.3pointsoutof100,respectively.Interestingly,allthreeofVodafoneNetherlands’domesticrivalsareGlobalLeadersforGamesExperience,withtheremainingGlobalLeadershailingfromJapan,SingaporeandSouthKorea.
Theglobalaverageacrossalloperatorsweanalyzedwas56.8points,whichindicatesaPoorGamesExperience.TheGamesExperiencescoresreportedforourGlobalHighPerformerswereatleast13.8points(24.3%)higherthantheaverage.AllofourGlobalWinnersandGlobalLeadersalongwith10outof25GlobalHighPerformersplacedintheGoodcategory,whiletheremainderofourGlobalHighPerformershadaFairrating.
AcrossalltheoperatorsthatOpensignalanalyzed,65%hadaPoororVeryPoorratingforthismeasureofthemobileexperience,while35%hadeitheraFairorGoodRating.NonemadeitintoourhighestcategoryforGamesExperience(Excellent).Thishighlightstheworkandinvestmentthatstillhastobedonetobringusers’GamesExperiencetothepointwherefactorssuchaslatency,jitterandpacketlossceasetohaveaperceptibleimpactonthemultiplayergamingexperience.
Lookingattheregions,SoftBankhadthehighestscoreforGamesExperienceintheAsiaPacificregion.However,inSouthEastAsiaStarHubandSingtelarestatisticallytiedfortop,withscoresof81.4and81points,respectively.
MobilegamingispopularwithsmartphoneusersbutmuchoftheactivitystillhappensonWificonnections,notcellular.WithmanymobileoperatorsincreasinglysupportingtheeSportsscenehopingtoattractmobilegamers,andusingmobilegamingtomarketthebenefitsof5G,itwillbeinterestingtoseehowquicklyoperatorscanimprovethecellularGamesExperiencetomeettheneedsofgamers.
AGoodGamesExperiencemeansthatmostofourusersdeemedtheexperienceacceptable.Thegameplayexperiencewasgenerallycontrollableandtheuserreceivedimmediatefeedbackbetweentheiractionsandtheoutcomes

SouthKorea’sLGU+isthesoleGlobalWinnerforVoiceAppExperience,withascoreof83.3outof100—atleast0.3pointsaheadofthepreviousGlobalWinner—Japan’sSoftBank—andSKtelecom,whicharestatisticallytiedforsecondplace.JapaneseandSouthKoreanoperatorsmadeupsixoutofournineGlobalLeaders—includingrelativenewcomerRakuten—withtheonlyexceptionsbeingVodafoneandT-MobilefromtheNetherlandsandVietnam’sViettelMobile.
LGU+’swinningscorewas7.5points(9.8%)higherthantheglobalaverageof75.8points.OurusersonLGU+,togetherwiththoseonalloftheGlobalLeaders’networksandthoseon25outof35ofourGlobalHighPerformershadaGoodVoiceAppExperience,withtheremainderhavinganAcceptableVoiceAppExperience.TheaverageVoiceAppExperienceobservedbyourusersplacedintheAcceptablecategory.OurGlobalHighPerformers’scoreswereatleast3.6points(4.7%)higherthantheglobalaverageof75.8points.
AGoodVoiceAppExperiencemeansthatmanyusersweresatisfied,althoughsomeofthemexperiencedminorqualityimpairments.Sometimesthebackgroundwasnotquiteclear,itcouldbeeitherhazyornotloudenough.Clickingsoundsordistortionwereveryoccasionallypresent.
AnAcceptableVoiceAppExperienceindicatesthatusersweresatisfied.However,someexperiencedperceptiblecallqualityimpairments.Shortdurationofclickingsoundsordistortioncouldbeheard,and/orthevolumemaynothavebeensufficientlyloud.Listenersweregenerallyabletocomprehendwithoutrepetition.
Generallyspeaking,thereissomeroomforimprovementasnooperatorsachievedanExcellentorVeryGoodratingforVoiceAppExperienceandonly20%ofthemplacedintheGoodcategory.However,70%placedineithertheGoodorAcceptablecategoriesandonly5%ofoperatorswereinoneofthethreelowestcategories(VeryPoor,Unintelligible,ImpossibletoCommunicate).
Regionally,Vietnam’sViettelMobilemanagedtoclawitswaypastallofSingapore’soperatorstograbthetopspotinSouthEastAsiawithascoreof82.1points.

Traditionallymuchofthefocusonmobilenetworkspeedshasbeenondownloadspeedsgivenconsumers’increasinguseofdata-intensiveservicessuchasvideostreaming.Thisischangingnowasuploadspeedsarebecomingmoreimportantwiththeriseofsocialmediaandcloudserviceswhichencourageuserstouploadphotos,videosandotherrichcontent.

Movingfurtherdownthetable,OpensignalusersontheGlobalHighPerformeroperatorsobservedaverageoveralluploadspeedsthatwereatleast2.6Mbpsor34.4%fasterthantheglobaloperatoraverageof7.5Mbps.Swisscom’sUploadSpeedExperiencescorewasaremarkable9.7Mbps(130%)fasterthantheglobaloperatoraverage.
Attheregionallevel,Singapore’sSingtelandStarHubweretiedforthetopspotinSouthEastAsia,butitwasLGU+whichcameuptopinbothAsiaPacificandNorthEastAsia.Meanwhile,Telus’scoreof10.4MbpsgaveittheupperhandinNorthAmerica.

SouthKorea’sLGU+hasexcelledfor4GAvailability.OurusersconnectingwithLGU+spentastaggering99.7%oftheirtimeconnectedto4G,just0.3percentagepointsawayfromaperfectscore.OurGlobalLeadersforthismeasureofthemobileexperienceincludeLGU+’sdomesticrivals,SKtelecomandKT,aswellasallfourofJapan’snationaloperators—includingrelativenewcomerRakutenandthepreviousGlobalWinnerau.
India’sJio,aswellasVerizonandT-MobilefromtheU.S.arealsoamongtheGlobalLeadersfor4GAvailability.Inaddition,threeoutoffouroftheNetherlands’nationaloperatorsareGlobalLeaders,withKPNplacingfurtherdownthetableasaGlobalHighPerformer.
Theaverageglobal4GAvailabilityacrossalloperatorswitha4Gnetworkwas86.4%—whichLGU+exceededbyaremarkable13.2percentagepoints.Asizable39%ofoperatorshada4GAvailabilityscorethatwas90%ormore,with15%havingascorethatwas95%orhigher.OurGlobalHighPerformershadscoresthatwereatleast7.2percentagepointshigherthantheglobaloperatoraveragefor4GAvailability.ThreeoftheNetherlands’operators—T-Mobile,Tele2andVodafone—werestatisticallytiedforthehighest4GAvailabilityscoreinEurope.

WehaveGlobalRisingStarsawardsforfivekeymeasuresofthereal-worldmobilenetworkexperience:thefourthatfeaturedinourlastreport—VideoExperience,DownloadSpeedExperience,UploadSpeedExperienceand4GAvailability—andVoiceAppExperienceforthefirsttime.
GlobalRisingStarscelebratestherecentachievementsofthoseoperatorsthathavemaderapidprogressinimprovingtheexperienceoftheirusersinashortperiodoftime.Bycontrast,Opensignal’sGlobalWinnerawardshighlightthefruitsofmanyyearsofcumulativeeffortandinvestmentbycomparingthecurrentstateofusers’mobileexperienceondifferentoperators.
TwooperatorsareGlobalRisingStarsforallfiveofthesemeasuresofthemobileexperience,namelyEgypt’sWEandBanglalinkinBangladesh.Afurther14operatorswereGlobalRisingStarsinfouroutoffivecategories,includingFrance’sFreeMobile,ClaroUruguay,Colombia’sTigoandbothofLibya’sNationaloperators,LibyanaandAl-Madar.
Whenanoperator’sinvestmentinits4Gnetworksignificantlyincreasestheproportionoftimethatourusersspendconnectedto4Gservices,ouruserstypicallyexperienceanimprovementacrossmanyofourmetricsbecauseof4G’senhancementsovertheolder3Gstandard.Indeed,outofthe14operatorsthatfeaturedinfourofourfiveRisingStarscategories,10wereGlobalRisingStarsfor4GAvailability.
