EmeryFridolfTobinwasborntoAugustandEmmaTobin,Swedishimmigrants,onDec.14,1895,inQuincy,Mass.,tenmilessouthofBoston.AugustTobinwasapaintingcontractor,workingfortheschooldistrict.ThegreatDepressionof1893hadaffectedeveryone.Tobin'scustomersownedhimmoneyandTobinowedmoneytohisowncreditors.Timeswerehard.

They'rephysicalwonders-abletoendureextremeconditionsforextensiveperiodsoftimewhilerunningfastandpullingmorethantheirownweight.Sled(雪橇)dogshavebeenaroundforgenerations,andtodaytheyremainalargepartofadogdriver'slife.

InArctic(北極的)regions,some35000yearsago,Eskimos'dogsbredwithwolvesandotherdogs.Theiroffspringwerewell-adaptedtothecoldandsnow.There'snosayingexactlywhensomeonethoughttohavedogspullsleds,butitwaswellbefore1000B.C.thatdogsledsprovidedameansoftransportationandawaytohaulgoods.Inrecentyears,peoplelookingforuniqueoutingshavegoneonrecreationaltripswithsleddogs.Anumberofcompaniesmarkettouristtreksviadogsledforadventuretravelers.

DogsledracinginAlaskaformallybeganin1908,whensleddogownersinNome,Alaska,heldthefirstAll-AlaskaSweepstakes,a408-mileracefromNometoCandleandback.Andin1973,theinauguralIditarodTrailSledDogRacetookplaceonaroutecoveringmorethan1000milesinAlaska.TherearemorecompetitionsinmanyofthecontinentalUnitedStates,andsometakeplaceondryland.Inadditiontoenduranceraces,sled-dogeventsincludesprintraces,weightpulls(inwhichdogstrytopullthemostweight)andfreightraces(inwhichdogstrytopullaweightedsledthefastest).

Stamina(耐力)andStrength

Manybreedsofdogsareusedtopullsleds,includingofficialAmericanKennelClubbreedssuchastheSiberianhusky,MalamuteandSamoyed.However,manysleddogsareofmixedbreedandarecalledAlaskahuskyorEskimodogs.WhilesomeSleddogsmayhavewolfbloodlines,it'sgenerallynotdesirabletohaveamixtureofbloodbetweenthetwo.

Sledclogsarebredfortheirspeedandenduranceaswellasleadershipqualities.Theyarebigdogswiththickcoatsandwide,flatfeet.Theysleepwiththeirtailscoveringtheirnosestokeepwarm.Dogsthatweigharound40to45poundsaretheidealsizetopullsleds,butsomemayweighasmuchas85pounds.
