networkof12,067peoplewhowerebeencloselyfollowedfor32years,from1971to2003.

Theinvestigatorsknewwhowerefriendswithwhomaswellaswhowasaspouseorsiblingorneighbor,andthey

knewhowmucheachpersonweighedatvarioustimesoverthreedecades.Thatletthemreconstructwhathappenedover

theyearsasindividualsbecameobese.Didtheirfriendsalsobecomeobese?Didfamilymembers?Orneighbors?

Theanswer,theresearchersreport,wasthatpeopleweremostlikelytobecomeobesewhenafriendbecameobese.

Thatincreasedaperson'schancesofbecomingobeseby57percent.Therewasnoeffectwhenaneighborgainedor

lostweight,however,andfamilymembershadlessinfluencethanfriends.

Itdidnotevenmatterifthefriendwashundredsofmilesaway,theinfluenceremained.Andthegreatest

influenceofallwasbetweenclosemutualfriends.There,ifonebecameobese,theotherhada171percentincreased

chanceofbecomingobese,too.

Thesameeffectseemedtooccurforweightloss,theinvestigatorssay.Butsincemostpeopleweregaining,not

losing,overthe32years,theresultwas,onaverage,thatpeoplegrewfatter.
