ThefilmissetthreeyearsaftertheonsetoftheCloneWars,thenobleJediKnightshavebeenleadingamassiveclonearmyintoagalaxy-widebattleagainsttheSeparatists.AfterthekidnappingofChancellorPalpatine,JediMasterObi-WanKenobiisdispatchedtoeliminatetheevilGeneralGrievous,whileJediKnightAnakinSkywalker'sgrowingfriendshipwiththeChancellorbecomesfrowneduponbytheJediorder,anddangeroustotheJediKnighthimself.WhenthesinisterSithMasterDarthSidiousunveilsathousand-year-oldplottorulethegalaxy,thefateofAnakin,theJediorder,andtheentiregalaxyisatstake.

Synopsis

TheBattleofCoruscantisdepictedasamassofcruisersbelongingtobothsidesintheupperatmosphereofCoruscant,withtwoARC-170starfightersmovingswiftlythroughthelabyrinthinearrangementofstarships.

Theopeningcrawlrevealsthatthegalaxyisinthemidstofwar.ChancellorPalpatinehasbeenkidnappedbytheSeparatists'second-in-command,GeneralGrievous.JediKnightAnakinSkywalkerandJediMasterObi-WanKenobileadamissiontorescuehim.AfterkillingCountDookuandfreeingtheChancellor,theJediattempttoescape,butarecapturedbyGeneralGrievousandtakentothebridge.AnakinandObi-Wanmanagetobreakfree,butGrievousescapesandtrapstheJediandtheChancellorinsidetheseverelydamagedcruiser.Anakinisforcedtocrash-landtheshipononeofCoruscant'slandingtracks.Uponhisreturn,Anakinisreunitedwithhiswife,PadméAmidala,whotellshimthatsheispregnant.DespitePadmé'sworriesovertheirsecretmarriage,Anakinisoverjoyedatthisnews,andthecouplemakeplanstoraisetheirchild.However,AnakinistroubledbyvisionsofPadmédyinginchildbirth,visionssimilartothosehehadofhismotherjustbeforeshedied.Later,Obi-WanprivatelytellsAnakinthattheCouncilwantshimtospyontheChancellorbecausetheybelievehimtobecorrupt.AnakinresentsthisastheChancellorislikeamentortohim.AstheChancellor'sbodyguard,AnakinslowlybuildsaclosefriendshipwithPalpatine,whosubtlymanipulatesAnakinintheirdiscussions,makinghimdistrusttheJedi.Palpatineclaimstoknowofanabilitytopreventdeath.ThisintriguesAnakin,whoiswillingtodoanythingtokeephisvisionsfromcomingtrueonceagain.

Obi-WanissenttoUtapau,whereheengagesandkillsGeneralGrievous.Meanwhile,backonCoruscant,PalpatinerevealshimselftoAnakinastheSithLordDarthSidious,whohasbeencontrollingtheRepublicandtheSeparatistmovement.AnakinleavestoexposehimtotheJediCouncil.MaceWinduarrivesattheChancellor'sofficeshortlythereafterandeventuallysubduesPalpatinethroughalightsaberduel.JustasAnakinarrives,WinduisabouttoslaytheChancellor.ThispromptsAnakintodisarmWindu,ashebelievesthattheChancellorholdstheonlywaytosavehiswife.WinduisconsumedbySidious'torrentsofforcelightning,forcinghimoutawindowandkillinghim.DarthSidioustakesAnakinashisSithapprenticeandgiveshimtheSithnameDarthVader.HethenordersVadertokillallJediwithintheJediTemple,thentogototheMustafarsystemandkilltheSeparatistleaders.PalpatineordersclonetroopersacrossthegalaxytoturnagainsttheirJediGeneralsbyenactingapre-programmeddirectivecalledOrder66.NumerousJediacrossthegalaxyareseenbeingexterminated,althoughbothYodaandObi-Wanbarelymanagetosurvive.DarthVaderbeginsakillingspreeintheJediTemple.Afterward,hegoestoPadméandtellshertheJedihaveattemptedtotakeovertheRepublicandleavesforMustafar,whereheslaughterstheSeparatistleaders.SenatorBailOrganarescuesObi-WanandYoda,andbringsthemtotheJediTemplebeforeheadingtotheSenatebuilding.PalpatineinformstheSenateofaJediplottooverthrowtheRepublic.Asaresult,heannouncesthattheRepublicwillbereorganizedintotheGalacticEmpire.IntheJediTemple,Obi-WanandYodareconfigureasignaltowarnallJeditokeepaway.Obi-WanlooksintothesecurityrecordingsandseesVadercarryingouttheordersofDarthSidiousandkneelingtohimafterward.Thoughheinitiallyrefuses,Obi-WaneventuallyagreestofindandkillVader.Obi-WanthenmeetswithPadmé,whorefusestobelievehisclaimsaboutAnakin'sfalltothedarkside.WhenshedepartsforMustafar,Obi-Wansecretlystowsawayonboard.

Whenthecoupleisreunited,PadmépleadswithVadertoleavepubliclifewithher,butherefuses—believingthathecanoverthrowPalpatinesothatheandPadmécanrulethegalaxytogether.VaderseesObi-WanemergefromPadmé'sship,andsuspectsherofbetrayinghim.Enraged,heusestheForcetochokePadméintounconsciousness.Obi-WanandVaderbreakintoaviciouslightsaberduel.Theduelbringsthemoutofthefacilitytounprotectedareasofthevolcanoplanet.Obi-Waneventuallygainstheadvantageofhigherground,butwhenVaderattemptstoattackagain,Obi-Wanslicesoffbothofhislegsandhisleftarmintwoswiftcuts.Vadertumblesdowntheembankmentandrollstoastopattheedgeofthelava.Hecatchesonfire,sustainingnear-fatalthird-degreeburnsandseverelungdamage.Obi-WanleavesMustafarwiththebadly-injuredPadméandAnakin'slightsaber.Later,DarthSidiousarrivesatMustafarandrescuesVaderfromthebrinkofdeath.

Padméisgivenmedicalassistance,andalthoughsheisphysicallyintact,herwilltoliveisgoneandshedies.However,themedicaldroidsmanagetosaveherbabies—shedeliverstwins,aboyandagirl.Justbeforeshedies,PadmégivesthemthenamesLukeandLeiaandswearstoObi-WanthatthereisstillgoodinAnakin.OnCoruscant,Vader'smissinglimbsanddamagedbodypartsarereplacedbycyberneticprosthesesandimplants.Vaderisputintoafullsuitofblackarmorandissealedinarespiratormask,whichwillallowhimtosurvivehisinjuries.WhenVaderasksEmperorPalpatineaboutPadmé'scondition,hetellsVaderthat,inhisanger,VaderhimselfkilledPadmé.VaderunleashesafuriousscreamofmournfulragethatdestroysdroidsandequipmentthroughouttheroomwhileSidiouslooksonwithanevilgrin.AboardtheTantiveIV,Obi-Wan,Yoda,andBailOrganaagreetokeepthechildrenhiddenandseparated.Obi-WanandYodawillwatchandwaituntilthetimeisreadyfortheSkywalkerchildrentodotheirpartinthebattleagainsttheSith.LeiaisbroughttoAlderaantolivewiththeQueenandBailOrgana,andLukeisbroughttoTatooinetolivewithOwenandBeru.ThefilmconcludeswithOwenandBeruholdingLukewhilestaringoutoverthedesertatTatooine'stwinsuns.

Reaction

Criticalreactiontowardsthefilmwaslargelyenthusiastic,especiallyincomparisontothetwopreviousprequels.FilmreviewsiteRottenTomatoescalculatedaratingof82%basedon229reviews,comparedtothe63%and66%receivedbyStarWarsEpisodeI:ThePhantomMenaceandStarWarsEpisodeII:AttackoftheClonesrespectively.Somecriticsnotedthattheyviewittobethebestoftheprequels,whileotherreviewersjudgedittobethebestStarWarsfilmsinceStarWarsEpisodeV:TheEmpireStrikesBack.A.O.ScottofTheNewYorkTimesconcludedthatitwas"thebestofthefourepisodesMr.Lucashasdirected,"andequaltoTheEmpireStrikesBackas"therichestandmostchallengingmovieinthecycle."

MuchofthecriticismforthefilmwasdirectedtowardsthedialogueofRevengeoftheSith,particularlythefilm'sromanticscenes.CriticsandfansalikewerequicktojumponsuchlinesofAnakinorPadméincluding"Holdme,Ani.Holdme,likeyoudidbythelakeonNaboo."CriticshaveclaimedthisdemonstratedLucas'weaknessasawriterofdialouge,thoughthesescenesneverthelessattractedfarlessirethantheircounterpartsinAttackoftheClones.

Othercriticismsincludedpreviouslyraisedissueswiththeprequels:"wooden"acting,overuseofflashyandcolorfulcomputer-generatedspecialeffects,andattemptstobebothchildishandmatureatthesametime.Itisoftensaidthefilmcontainsanumberofplotholes,althoughthisclaimiswidelydisputedanddebatedbyfans.Thoughmanycriticsandfanssawitasoneofthebestoftheseries,oratleast,thestrongestofthethreeprequels,otherssawitasmoreorlessonparwithThePhantomMenaceandAttackoftheClones.Someneoconservativescriticizedthefilm,claimingithasaliberalbiasandisa"weak"commentaryonthe.BushAdministrationandthe./Iraqiwar.Somewebsiteswentsofarastoproposeaboycottofthefilm.However,Lucasdefendedthefilm,statingthatthefilm'sstorylinewaswrittenduringtheVietnamWar,andwasinfluencedbyitinstead.Lucasdidnotehoweverthat"TheparallelsbetweenVietnamandwhatwe'redoinginIraqnowareunbelievable."However,aletterpostedatfilmcriticRogerEbert'swebsiteclaimsthatthefilmwasthemostconservativefilmof2005.

McDiarmid'sperformanceasPalpatinewasgenerallywell-receivedbycritics.ToddMcCarthyofVarietycommented,"Entertainingfromstarttofinishandevenenthrallingattimes,'Sith'hassomeactingworthwritinghomeabout,specificallyMcDiarmid'sdominantturnasthemastermindoftheevilempire."AreviewerforTheVillageVoicewrotethat"IanMcDiarmid'sunctuousEmperor—whobearsastrangeresemblancetoPopeBenedictXVI,sunkeneyesandall—turnsappropriatelyvampiricasheattemptstodrawAnakinintotheSithfoldwithpromisesofeternallife."

Anindicationofthefilm'spublicreceptionisitsratingof(asofNovember26,2006)intheInternetMovieDatabase,whereasitstwopredecessors,ThePhantomMenaceandAttackoftheClones,ratedandrespectively.Forreference,bothANewHopeandTheEmpireStrikesBackrated(ranked11and10inTop250filmsrespectively),whileReturnoftheJedirated(ranked109).

Boxofficeperformance

RevengeoftheSithwasreleasedin115countries.Worldwidegrossforthefilmeventuallyreachednearly$850million—rankingthefilmsecondworldwidein2005,andbehindHarryPotterandtheGobletofFire.Thefilmearnedanestimated$millionfrom2,900midnightscreeningsinNorthAmericauponitsrelease.Intotal,itearnedarecord$50milliononitsopeningday.ItwassurpassedthefollowingyearbyPiratesoftheCaribbean:DeadMan'sChestwhichearned$milliononitsopeningday.

WithonlytheMay19earnings,thefilmbrokefourboxofficerecords:midnightscreeningsgross(previouslyheldbyTheLordoftheRings:ReturnoftheKing,$8million),openingdaygross(Spider-Man2,with$million),singledaygross(Shrek2with$million)andThursdaygross(TheMatrixReloadedwith$million).ItssingledaygrossrecordandopeningdaygrossrecordwerelatersurpassedbyPiratesoftheCaribbean:DeadMan'sChestonJuly7,2006,whenthatmoviegrossed$milliononitsopeningday.ItstillretainsitsrecordsformidnightscreeninggrossandThursdaygross,however.

Accordingtoboxofficeanalysissites,RevengeoftheSithsetAmericanrecordsforhighestgrossinagivennumberofdaysforeachofitsfirsttwelvedaysofreleaseexceptfortheseventhandeighth,wheretherecordisnarrowlyheldbySpider-Man2.Onitsfifthdayitbecamethehighestgrossingmovieof2005,surpassingHitch($million).

RevengeoftheSithearned$millioninitsfirstfour-dayperiod,surpassingthepreviousfour-dayrecordheldbyTheMatrixReloaded($million),andjoiningSpider-Man,TheMatrixReloadedandHarryPotterandtheGobletofFireastheonlymoviestomake$100millioninthreedays.

RevengeoftheSithearned$200millioninitsfirsteightdays(recordtiedwithSpider-Man2).Byits17thday,ithadpassed$300million(surpassingtherecordof18daysofShrek2).Thefilmearned$25,088,336initsthirdweekend(June3-5).Itwaseventuallythethirdfastestfilm(afterShrek2andSpider-Man)toreach$350million.

Awards

Despitebeingthebestreviewedandmostwellreceivedfilmintheprequeltrilogy,RevengeoftheSithreceivedthesmallestnumberofawardnominationsincomparisontothepreviousfilms(35categoriesintotal,comparedtoThePhantomMenace's55andAttackoftheClones'38categorynominations).

Inretrospect,thefilmdidhoweverreceivethesmallestnumberofGoldenRaspberryAwardsnominations,onlyoneforHaydenChristensenasWorstSupportingActor,whichhe"won"(bothThePhantomMenaceandAttackoftheClonesreceived7nominationseach,with1and2"wins",respectively).Thisnominationwascontroversial,asChristensen'scharacter,AnakinSkywalker,isthemainfocusofthefilm,andnotasupportingactor(thenominatingballotslistedMcGregorastheleadactor).ItistheonlyStarWarsprequeltonotreceiveaRazzienominationfor"WorstPicture".Christensendidhoweverwinthe"BestVillain"awardattheMTVMovieAwards.
