PewResearchCenterconductedthisstudytounderstandthepublic’sviewsonPresidentJoeBiden,othercongressionalleadersandthenation’seconomy.Forthisanalysis,wesurveyed6,174U.S.adultsbetweenJune27andJuly4,2022.EveryonewhotookpartinthissurveyisamemberoftheCenter’sAmericanTrendsPanel(ATP),anonlinesurveypanelthatisrecruitedthroughnational,randomsamplingofresidentialaddresses.ThiswaynearlyallU.S.adultshaveachanceofselection.ThesurveyisweightedtoberepresentativeoftheU.S.adultpopulationbygender,race,ethnicity,partisanaffiliation,educationandothercategories.

Withpublicviewsofthenation’seconomyattheirmostnegativeinyears,JoeBiden’spoliticalstandingisatthelowestpointofhispresidency.YetBidenishardlytheonlyfocalpointofthecountry’spoliticaldiscontent:Americansexpressunfavorableviewsofbothmajorpartiesandarangeofleadingpoliticalfigures,includingBiden’spredecessor,DonaldTrump.

Biden’scurrentjobapprovalnumbersarethelowestsincehebecamepresident,with37%ofU.S.adultssayingtheyapproveofhowheishandlinghisjobaspresidentwhile62%disapprove.Biden’sjobratinghasdeclined6percentagepointssinceMarch(43%)and18pointsoverthepastyear;lastJuly,a55%majorityapprovedofBiden’sjobperformance.

Amidpersistentinflation,thepublic’sviewsofthenationaleconomyhaveworsenedsincethestartofthisyear.Today,just13%ofadultssayeconomicconditionsintheUnitedStatesareexcellentorgood;28%saidthissixmonthsago.

Viewsoftheeconomy–andtheimpactofthepresident’spoliciesoneconomicconditions–havelongbeendeeplydividedalongpartisanlines.Still,only20%ofDemocratsandDemocratic-leaningindependentssayBiden’spolicieshavemadetheeconomybetter,while52%saytheyhavehadlittleimpactand27%saytheyhavemadethingsworse.AmongRepublicansandRepublicanleaners,90%sayBiden’spolicieshavemadetheeconomyworse.

AnewPewResearchCentersurveyof6,174U.S.adults,conductedJune27toJuly4,findsthatjust20%ofDemocratsand5%ofRepublicansratethenation’seconomicconditionsasexcellentorgood.TheseopinionshavedeclinedsubstantiallysinceJanuary,when36%ofDemocratsand20%ofRepublicansviewedtheeconomypositively.Currently,RepublicansarefarmorelikelythanDemocratstorateconditionsaspoor(67%vs.32%);Democratsaremorelikelytosaytheyare“onlyfair”(47%vs.28%).
