creatures.Shewitnessedascene,ascenetakingustoaplaceweneverimaged
weveeverbeen,whereintheverydepthoftheAfricanrainforest,surrounded
bytrees,flowersandbutterflies,themothergorillascuddledtheirbabies.
Yes,thatsamemorablesceneinoneofmyfavoritemovies,calledGorillas
intheMist,basedonatruestoryofMrs.DianaFossey,whospentmostofher
lifetimeinRwandatoprotecttheecoenvironmentthereuntiltheveryendofher
life.
Tome,themovienotonlypresentsanunforgettablescenebutalsoactsas

Alltheseappallingfactshavebroughtustotherealizationthatwecanno

ourresources.Encouragingly,theexplosivegrowthofglobaltravelhasput

theyearofecotourism,forthefirsttimetobringtotheworldsattentionthe

Noweveryyear,manylocalecoenvironmentalprotectionorganizationsare
receivingdonations-bignotes,smallnotesorevencoins-fromhousewives,
plumbers,ambulancedrivers,salesmen,teachers,childrenandinvalids.Someof

haveshiedfroemcloserelationshipsinwhichtheyconfideinothers.By
bottlinguptheiremotions,mendeprivethemselvesofahealthyoutletfortheir

Verycloesandtrustedfriendsshareconfidencescandidly.Theyfeelsecure
thattheywillnotberidiculedorderided,andtheirconfidenceswillbe

shy,Ihadbeenreluctanttotakepartinanysuchactivities.Encouragedbymy

Atamorepracticallevel,Irealizedknowingwhatyouaregoingtosayand
howyouaregoingtosayitareequallyimportant.Totaketheoriginalideas
outofyourheadandtransplantthem,sotospeak,tothatofothers,youneed
tohaveanorganizedmind.Thisabilityimproveswithtraining.
Yetthereshouldnotbeanylossoradditionordistortionintheprocess.
Thoseideasthatfinallyfindtheirwayintoanotherheadneedtobe
recognizablyyours.Languageisameanstotransmitinformation,notameansto
obstructcommunication.Itshouldbelucidtobepenetrating.
InChina,certainpublicspeakingskillshavebeenundulyemphasized.Will
itreallyhelp,wearecompelledtoask,tobangatthepodiumoryellatthe

communicateacrossdifferencesincultureandideologyisnotonlyfeltbythe
twocountriesbutbymanyothernationsaswell.
Aswecanseetoday,environmentalistsfromdifferentcountriesaremaking
jointeffortstoaddresstheissueofglobalwarming,economistsareseeking
solutionstofinancialcrisesthatrageinaparticularregionbutnonetheless
crippletheworldeconomy,andpoliticiansanddiplomatsaregettingtogetherto
discusstheissueofcombatingterrorism.Peaceandprosperityhasbecomea
commongoalthatwearestrivingforallovertheworld.Underlyingthismighty

WiththeITrevolution,traditionalboundariesofhumansocietyfallaway.
Ourculture,politics,societyandcommercearebeingsloshedintoonelarge
meltingpotofhumanity.Inthisinterlinkedworld,therearenooutsiders,for
adisturbanceinoneplaceislikelytoimpactotherpartsoftheglobe.Wehave
beguntorealizethataworlddividedcannotendure.
Chinaisnowactivelyintegratingintotheworld.Ourrecententrytothe
WTOisagoodexample.Fordecades,wehavetakenprideinbeingself-reliant,
butnowwerealizetheimportanceofparticipatinginandcontributingtoa
broadereconomicorder.Fromaprecariousroleintheworldarenatoourpresent
WTOmembership,wehavecomealongway.
ButwhatdoesthewayaheadlooklikeInsomepartsoftheworldpeople
aredemonstratingagainstglobalization.Aretheyjustified,then,in
criticizingtheglobalizingworldInsteadofnarrowingthegapbetweentherich
andthepoor,theysay,globalizationenablesthedevelopednationstoswallow
thedevelopingnationswealthindebtsandinterest.Globalization,theyargue,
shouldbeaboutacommoninterestineveryothernationseconomichealth.
WeareremindedbyKarlMarxthatcapitalgoesbeyondnationalbordersand
eludescontrolfromanyotherentity.Thishasbecomeareality.Multinational
corporationsareseekingthelowestcost,thelargestmarket,andthemost
favourablepolicy.Theyareoftenpowerfullobbyistsingovernment
decision-making,ruthlessexpansionistsintheglobalmarketandadevastating
presencetolocalbusinesses.
ForChina,stillmorechallengesexist.Howarewegoingtoensureasmooth
transitionfromtheplannedeconomytoamarket-basedoneHowtoconstructa
legalsystemthatissoundenoughandbroadenoughtorespondtotheneedsofa
dynamicsocietyHowtomaintainourculturalidentityinanincreasingly
homogeneousworldAndhowtodefinegreatnessinourriseasapeace-loving
nationGlobalizationentailsquestionsthatconcernusall.
LikemanyyoungpeoplemyageinChina,Iwanttoseemycountryget
prosperousandenjoyrespectintheinternationalcommunity.Butitseemstome
thatmerepatriotismisnotjustenough.Itisvitallyimportantthatweyoung

Inmyelementaryyears,therewasalittlegirlintheclasswhoworked
veryhardbutsomehowcouldneverdosatisfactorilyinherlessons.
Theteacheraskedmetohelpher,anditwasobviousthatsheexpecteda
lotfromme.butasayoungboy,restless,thoughtless,Ialwaystriedtoevade
hersoastogetmoretimetoenjoymyself.
Onedaybeforethefinalexam,shecameuptomeandsaid,Couldyouplease
