creatures.Shewitnessedascene,ascenetakingustoaplaceweneverimaged

weveeverbeen,whereintheverydepthoftheAfricanrainforest,surrounded

bytrees,flowersandbutterflies,themothergorillascuddledtheirbabies.

Yes,thatsamemorablesceneinoneofmyfavoritemovies,calledGorillas

intheMist,basedonatruestoryofMrs.DianaFossey,whospentmostofher

lifetimeinRwandatoprotecttheecoenvironmentthereuntiltheveryendofher

life.

Tome,themovienotonlypresentsanunforgettablescenebutalsoactsas

haveshiedfroemcloserelationshipsinwhichtheyconfideinothers.By

bottlinguptheiremotions,mendeprivethemselvesofahealthyoutletfortheir

negativetefeeling.

howyouaregoingtosayitareequallyimportant.Totaketheoriginalideas

outofyourheadandtransplantthem,sotospeak,tothatofothers,youneed

tohaveanorganizedmind.Thisabilityimproveswithtraining.

Yetthereshouldnotbeanylossoradditionordistortionintheprocess.

Thoseideasthatfinallyfindtheirwayintoanotherheadneedtobe

recognizablyyours.Languageisameanstotransmitinformation,notameansto

obstructcommunication.Itshouldbelucidtobepenetrating.

twocountriesbutbymanyothernationsaswell.

Aswecanseetoday,environmentalistsfromdifferentcountriesaremaking

jointeffortstoaddresstheissueofglobalwarming,economistsareseeking

solutionstofinancialcrisesthatrageinaparticularregionbutnonetheless

crippletheworldeconomy,andpoliticiansanddiplomatsaregettingtogetherto

discusstheissueofcombatingterrorism.Peaceandprosperityhasbecomea

Ourculture,politics,societyandcommercearebeingsloshedintoonelarge

meltingpotofhumanity.Inthisinterlinkedworld,therearenooutsiders,for

adisturbanceinoneplaceislikelytoimpactotherpartsoftheglobe.Wehave

beguntorealizethataworlddividedcannotendure.

Chinaisnowactivelyintegratingintotheworld.Ourrecententrytothe

WTOisagoodexample.Fordecades,wehavetakenprideinbeingself-reliant,

butnowwerealizetheimportanceofparticipatinginandcontributingtoa

broadereconomicorder.Fromaprecariousroleintheworldarenatoourpresent

WTOmembership,wehavecomealongway.

ButwhatdoesthewayaheadlooklikeInsomepartsoftheworldpeople

aredemonstratingagainstglobalization.Aretheyjustified,then,in

criticizingtheglobalizingworldInsteadofnarrowingthegapbetweentherich

andthepoor,theysay,globalizationenablesthedevelopednationstoswallow

thedevelopingnationswealthindebtsandinterest.Globalization,theyargue,

shouldbeaboutacommoninterestineveryothernationseconomichealth.

WeareremindedbyKarlMarxthatcapitalgoesbeyondnationalbordersand

eludescontrolfromanyotherentity.Thishasbecomeareality.Multinational

corporationsareseekingthelowestcost,thelargestmarket,andthemost

favourablepolicy.Theyareoftenpowerfullobbyistsingovernment

decision-making,ruthlessexpansionistsintheglobalmarketandadevastating

presencetolocalbusinesses.

ForChina,stillmorechallengesexist.Howarewegoingtoensureasmooth

transitionfromtheplannedeconomytoamarket-basedoneHowtoconstructa

legalsystemthatissoundenoughandbroadenoughtorespondtotheneedsofa

dynamicsocietyHowtomaintainourculturalidentityinanincreasingly

homogeneousworldAndhowtodefinegreatnessinourriseasapeace-loving

Theteacheraskedmetohelpher,anditwasobviousthatsheexpecteda

lotfromme.butasayoungboy,restless,thoughtless,Ialwaystriedtoevade

hersoastogetmoretimetoenjoymyself.
