Baruchbecameinterestedinthephysicalsciencesandtheworksof
ThomasHobbesandReneDescartes.Asaresultofhisstudies,hegrew
awayfromJudaismandwithdrewfromthesynagogue.In1656,therabbis
banishedSpinozafromAmsterdam.ForthenextfiveyearsheIivedonthe
outsideofthecitywherehesupportedhimseIfbygrindingopticallenses.
Duringthistime,SpinozawrotehisfirstphilosophicalworkTreatise
