KateChopinKateChopin:bornKatherineO'Flaherty;(February8,1850–August22,1904)wasanAmericanauthorofshortstoriesandnovelsbasedinLouisiana.SheisnowconsideredbysomescholarstohavebeenaforerunnerofAmerican20th-centuryfeministauthorsofSouthernorCatholicbackground,suchasZeldaFitzgerald.Thetitlemayarousethecuriosityoftheaudience,“Whathappenedinanhour?”ThestorymightberelatedtofeminismKnowingthatMrs.Mallardwasafflictedwithahearttrouble,greatcarewastakentobreaktoherasgentlyaspossiblethenewsofherhusband’sdeath.ItwashersisterJosephinewhotoldher,inbrokensentences,veiledhintsthatrevealedinhalfconcealing.Herhusband’sfriendRichardswasthere,too,nearher.Itwashewhohadbeeninthenewspaperofficewhenintelligenceoftherailroaddisasterwasreceived,withBrentlyMallard’snameleadingthelistof“killed”.Hehadonlytakenthetimetoassurehimselfofitstruthbyasecondtelegram,andhashastenedtoforestallanylesscareful,lesstenderfriendinbearingthesadmessage.AnylesscarefulfriendmightkillMrs.Mallardbybreakingthenewsabruptly.TheconflictwasbroughttothereadersdirectlyatthebeginningofthestoryThisalsosetsthesettingforthestoryConcretewordsshowinghowcarefulJosephinewasShedidnothearthestoryasmanywomenhaveheardthesame,withaparalyzedinabilitytoacceptitssignificance.Sheweptatonce,withsudden,wildabandonment,inhersister’sarms.Whenthestormofgriefhadspentitselfshewentawaytoherroomalone.Shewouldhavenoonefollowher.Therestood,facingtheopenwindow,acomfortableroomyarmchair.Intothisshesank,presseddownbyaphysicalexhaustionthathauntedherbodyandseemedtoreachintohersoul.DescriptionofactionCarefulchoicesofwords.Concrete,specificverbs
