Austenstartedtowriteforfamilyamusementasachild.Herearliest-knownwritingsdatefromabout1787.Veryshyaboutherwriting,shewroteonsmallpiecesofpaperthatsheslippedunderthedeskplotterifanyonecameintotheroom.Afterthedeathofherfatherin1805,shelivedwithhermotherandsisterinSouthamptonandmovedin1809toalargecottageinthevillageofChawton.Austennevermarried,buthersociallifewasactive.Shewasconnectedwiththemiddling-richlandedgentrythatsheportrayedinhernovels.backgroundThisstorytakesplaceinEnglandintheearly1800's.Duringthetimeknown
