Duringthisterm,IhavereadanovelTheRedandtheBlack.ThenovelwaswrittenbytheFrenchwriterStendhalinthe19thcentury.Marie·HenriBeyle,betterknownbyhispennameStendhal,wasoneofthecriticalrealismFrenchwritersinthe19thcentury.ThemilitaryandtheatricalworldsoftheFirstFrenchEmpirewerearevelationtoBeyle.Knownforhisacuteanalysisofhischaracters'psychologyandreflectionofsociety,heisconsideredoneoftheearliestandforemostpractitionersofrealisminhistwonovelsLeRougeetleNoir(TheRedandtheBlack,1830)andLaChartreusedeParme(TheCharterhouseofParma,1839)。StendhallaiddownforhimselfinadiaryentryofMay1804:“regardeverythingI’vereadtodateaboutmanasaprediction;believeonlywhatIhaveseenformyself.Joy,happiness,fame,allisuponit.”Futuritycallitrealismcreationmethod.InFrance,Stendhalwasthefirstlitterateurtorevealcorruptionofthebourgeoisiethroughliterature.
Thenovelmarksthebeginningofrealism.AndréGidesaidthatTheRedandtheBlackwasanovelaheadofitstime,thatitwasanovelforreadersinthetwentiethcentury.InStendhal’stime,prosenovelsincludeddialogueandomniscientnarratordescriptions;hisgreatcontributiontoliterarytechniquewasdescribingthepsychologies(feelings,thoughts,innermonologues)ofthecharacters,resultantlyheisconsideredthecreatorofthepsychologicalnovel.
Thepaper'sopeningsentence:“Ifyourcharactersdonottalkaboutpolitics,theyarenottheFrenchin1830.”isthefamoussentenceinTheRedandTheBlack.ThematerialofTheRedandTheBlackisbasedonarealisticeventthatatutorkilledherhostessin1827.WhenStendhalreadthestoryinthenewspaper,headapteditandwrotethelongbildungsromannovelTheRedandTheBlack.Thework,previouslytitledJulien,then,changedintoTheRedandTheBlack.TheRedsymbolizesmanythings,theuniformoftheNapoleonera,Mrs.Renal’sblood,revolutionandcontributionbythecommonpeople.TheBlackalsostandsforrobesofpriests,Martel’smourningapparelandtheplotofchurch.Thesubtitle,AChronicleofthe19thCentury,definitelystatesthetimebackground.Thusitcanbeseen,StendhalconsciouslywrotethispoliticaltintnovelaboutsocietyofBourbonRestoration.TheRedandTheBlackisthefirstcriticalrealismnovelinEurope.

AlthoughTheRedandTheBlackwaswritteninthe19thcentury,thenovelisstillofreflectivevaluetoourrealthemodernsociety,westillcanfindoutmany“Juliens”。Theyareyoungandtalented,butlowbirth.Atfirst,theydespisetheunfairtreatmentinthesociety.Theyhatecorruptionofdisdainthepersonwhohasspecialpowerandprivileges.However,theyalwayslongforjoiningintheofficialdom.TheironhandofcruelnecessitybrokethoseJuliens’wills.Onceintotheofficialdom,theygraduallylosethemselves.Finally,theyevenenjoyinitandtrytodefendthemselves.
Infact,theymustendoffailurelikeJulien,Ithink,againsttheirwills,followingthewrongmindandtakingadvantageoftheempressementofothers.LearningofJulien’sromanticliaisonwithMathilde,theMarquisdelaMoleisangered,butrelentsbeforeherdetermination,andhisaffectionforhim,andbestowsuponJulienanincome-producingpropertyattachedtoanaristocratictitle,andamilitarycommissioninthearmy.Althoughreadytoblesstheirmarriage,hechangeshisminduponreceivingthereplytoacharacter-reference-letterhewrotetotheabbéChénal,Julien’spreviousemployerinthevillageofVerrières;however,thereplyletter,writtenbyMadamedeRênal—attheurgingofherconfessorpriest—warnstheMarquisthatJulienSorelisasocial-climbingcadwhopreysuponemotionallyvulnerablewomen.OnlearningtheMarquis’sdisapprovalofthemarriage,JulienSoreltravelstohishomevillageofVerrièresandshootsMadamedeRênalduringMassinthevillagechurch;shesurvives.DespitetheeffortsofMathilde,MadamedeRênal,andthepriestsdevotedtohimsincehisearlylife,JulienSorelisdeterminedtodie—becausethematerialistsocietyofBourbonRestorationFrancewillnotaccommodatealow-bornmanofsuperiorintellectandaestheticsensibilitypossessingneithermoneynorsocialconnections.

Julienisatragicalcharacterinthisnovel.HerepresentstheyoungpeopleofPettyBourgeoisieintheBourbonRestoration.Theyareyoungandtalented,butlowbirth.Finally,theyendofdeath.Asthenovelshown,thesocietyundercontrolofCharlesXofFrancewasdark.Therewasnomiddlewayforthem.Theconnectionbetweenpeoplewasonlymoney,evenbetweenfatherandson.WhenJulienwasintheprison,hisfathervisitedhim.Atthebeginning,hisfatherscoldedhim.HethoughtthatJulienwasashameofhisfamily.WhilefatherheardofthemoneyJulienhad,fatherchangedhisattitudeatonce.Youhadmoney,peoplerespectedyou;withoutmoney,peoplelookeddownuponyou.Inthatsociety,withoutmoney,youwerenothing!Julienwasthevictimofcashnexus.Icannothelpsaying:”Itisaneat-manworld!”IfJulienlivesinthemodernsociety,withoutrepressandexploitationofclass,Ibelieve,hemustbeappreciatedbyothersandbecomeasuccessfulperson.
JulienSorelispractical,greedy,andcruel.Inordertorealizehisaimandgetridofpoverty,JulientookadvantageofMathildebyhookorbycrook.Hebelievedthattheendjustifiesthemeans.Itistruethateveryoneshouldtryhisbesttoachievewhatheispursuing.Butweshoulddoitinaproperandmoralway.Andwhateverwedo,weshouldn'tforgetthatloveandhonestyshouldremainthemostcherishableelementsinourlife.
Todaywearelivinginaharmonioussociety;weshouldkeepourpurityandhumanity.Fameandfortuneareimportant,buttheyarenoteverything.Loveandhonestyareofmoreimportanceforapeacefullife.Weshouldtrusteachother,helpeachother,andtakecareofeachother.
AlthoughJulienendedofdeath,westillhavemanythingstolearnfromhim.Hewaslowbirth,buthealwaysencouragedhimselfthat:”Iwillbegreat!”Henevergaveup.Whenweencountersomeproblems,weshouldtrytosolvetheminsteadofgivingup.Plus,beforeJulienstartedathing,healwayshadmadeaplan.Everythingmustbecarefullyplannedbeforeweact,thentwiceasmuchcanbeaccomplishedwithhalftheeffort.
