TheAustralianGovernmentispleasedtoparticipateinEarthHour2022.EarthHourisagreathome-grownAustralianinitiative.Itbeganjusttwoyearsago.Butitsalreadyaworldwidemovement–withmorethanathousandcitiesparticipatingin2022.

Itsmessageissimplythis.Climatechangeisachallengeforallofus.Andweallneedtoputourshouldertothewheel,totacklethisimmensechallenge.Thatmessageisabsolutelyvitalthisyear,asthenationsoftheworldworktogetheraheadoftheCopenhagenSummitlasterthisyear.

It”scrucialthatwereachadealoncuttinggreenhousegasemissions.Thisisnotonlyanenvironmentalchallenge–it’salsoamassiveeconomicchallenge,apoliticalchallengeandoneofthegreatestmoralchallengesofourage.

Everycountrymustplayitspart–developedcountriesmusttakethelead,butdevelopingcountriesmustbeapartofthesolution.SincethebeginningoftheIndustrialRevolution,wehaveallbeenonacarbon-heavypathofeconomicdevelopment.Thatmustchange.

Wemusttransitiontothelow-carbonpath.Wemustbeabletogrowoureconomies,whilereducingcarbonpollution.Thatwillrequireinternationalcooperationonalevelweveneverseenbefore–toreduceemissions,tosharetechnologies,andtosupportthosenationswhocan”tmakethistransitionbythemselves.

Australiaismakingitscontributioninternationally,andathome.We”vecommittedtoreduceouremissionsbybetween5and15percentby2022comparedto2022levels.That’sareductionofbetween34and41percentperheadofpopulation.Andby2050,emissionswillbedownby60percent.

InrecentdaystheGovernmenthasreleasedthedraftlegislationforaCarbonPollutionReductionScheme,toachievethesetargets.Thatschemewillforthefirsttimeputacostoncarbonpollutionandcreatetheincentivestoreduceemissions,startingfromnextyear.

We’vealsocommittedtogenerating20percentofourelectricitysupplyfromrenewablesourcesby2022.Thatmeansourentirehouseholdelectricityneedswillcomefromrenewablesources.

EarlythisyeartheGovernmentannounceda$42billionNationBuildingandJobsPlantohelpsupportjobsandgrowthinthefaceoftheworstglobaleconomicrecessionsincethe1930s.AcorepartofthisPlanisthelargestinvestmentinenergyefficiencyinthenation”shistory–whichwillpayforinsulationorsolarhotwaterfor2.2millionAustralianhomes.
