TheflamewasreintroducedtotheOlympicsatthe1928AmsterdamGames.Acauldronwaslit,buttherewasnotorchrelay.

ThefirstOlympictorchrelaywasatthe1936BerlinSummerGames.CarlDiem,aGermanhistoryprofessorandSecretaryGeneraloftheOrganizingCommitteeoftheGamesinn,educedtherelayasawayofreconnectingthemodernOlympicswiththeGames'historicalroots.TheflamewaslitinOlympia,Greece,justasithadbeencenturiesbefore.ThenitwascarriedtoBerlin,Germany,forthestartoftheOlympics.
