Theobjectiveofthiscourseistoprovidetheconcepts,procedures,data,anddecisionanalysistechniquesnecessarytodesignmachineelementscommonlyfoundinmechanicaldevicesandsystems.Studentscompletingacourseofstudyusingthiscourseshouldbeabletoexecuteoriginaldesignsformachineelementsandintegratetheelementsintoasystemcomposedofseveralelements.

Thisprocessrequiresaconsiderationoftheperformancerequirementsofanindividualelementandoftheinterfacesbetweenelementsastheyworktogethertoformasystem.Forexample,agearmustbedesignedtotransmitpoweratagivenspeed.Thedesignmustspecifythenumberofteeth,pitch,toothform,facewidth,pitchdiameter,material,andmethodofheattreatment.Butthegeardesignalsoaffects,andisaffectedby,thematinggear,theshaftcarryingthegear,andtheenvironmentinwhichitistooperate.Furthermore,theshaftmustbesupportedbybearings,whichmustbecontainedinahousing.Thus,thedesignershouldkeepthecompletesysteminmindwhiledesigningeachindividualelement.Thiscoursewillhelpthestudentapproachdesignproblemsinthisway.

Thiscourseisdesignedforstudentsformechanicalengineeringorso.Theemphasisisontheuseofreadilyavailablematerialsandprocessesandappropriatedesignapproachestoachieveasafe,efficientdesign.Itisassumedthatthepersonusingthecoursewillbethedesigner,thatis,thepersonresponsiblefordeterminingtheconfigurationofamachineorapartofamachine.Wherepractical,alldesignequations,data,andproceduresneededtomakedesigndecisionsarespecified.
