Thelessonweneedtodrawfromthisphenomenonisincreasinglyevident:Modernscientists(andtheirfirstcousins,engineers)mustbecomeasadeptindealingwithsocietalandpoliticalforcesastheyarewithgravitationalandelectromagneticforces—and,candidly,uptothispointIwouldnotgiveusapassinggrade.Today'sscientistsarenolongerconstrainedsimplybythelawsofnature,aswasgenerallythecaseinthepast,butalsobythelaws(andattitudes)oftheland.Forexample:

Wouldaninventorbepermittedtodaytointroduceanewproductthatwouldcreatemillionsofjobsandmakepeople'slivesfarmoreconvenient,ifprojectionsshoweditwouldcostthelivesof50,000Americansayear?IdonotknowwhatKarlBenz,GottliebDaimler,andHenryFordwouldanswer,butIwouldseriouslydoubtit.

Couldwebuildasuperconductingsupercollider?Amannedbaseonthemoon?OpennewAlaskanoilfields?Createareliableballisticmissiledefenseagainstterroristnations?Quitelikely—ifanyonewantsusto.

InJapanandChina,reducingpollutionfromanimalwasteshasbeenanimportantfactor.Privies,henhousesandpigpensarebuiltinproximitytothefermentationchamberinChina.Examinationsofthedigestedslurryhaveshownthatthetotalnumberofparasiteeggswasreducedby93.6percent,hookwormsby99percentandnoschisto-someflukeswerefound.Thegreatestbenefitsfrombiogassystems,however,areprobablytobederivedfromthemanorialvalueoftheslurry,althoughitisnotwidelyusedoutsideofIndiaandChina.VegetablefarmersnearCalcuttafoundthatthedigestedslurryproducedbiggerandbettertastingpeasthandidotherfertilizersandtheweightofrootvegetablesincreasedbynearly300percent.
