Wewouldliketosubmittheenclosedmanuscriptentitled"GDNFAcutelyModulatesNeuronalExcitabilityandA-typePotassiumChannelsinMidbrainDopaminergicNeurons",whichwewishtobeconsideredforpublicationinNatureNeuroscience.
GDNFhaslongbeenthoughttobeapotentneurotrophicfactorforthesurvivalofmidbraindopaminergicneurons,whicharedegeneratedinParkinson’sdisease.Inthispaper,wereportanunexpected,acuteeffectofGDNFonA-typepotassiumchannels,leadingtoapotentiationofneuronalexcitability,inthedopaminergicneuronsincultureaswellasinadultbrainslices.Further,weshowthatGDNFregulatestheK+channelsthroughamechanismthatinvolvesactivationofMAPkinase.Thus,thisstudyhasrevealed,forthefirsttime,anacutemodulationofionchannelsbyGDNF.OurfindingschallengetheclassicviewofGDNFasalong-termsurvivalfactorformidbraindopaminergicneurons,andsuggestthatthenormalfunctionofGDNFistoregulateneuronalexcitability,andconsequentlydopaminerelease.TheseresultsmayalsohaveimplicationsinthetreatmentofParkinson’sdisease.

exchange.WethinkthathybridfunctionalsincludingtheHartree-Fockexchangearenotnecessarilyappropriatefordescribinginterfacialchemicalreactionssuchasmolecularadsorptiononsolids.Forexample,thepopularHSEhybridfunctionalhasbeendemonstratedtoconsiderablyoverestimatestheadsorptionenergies(NewJ.Phys.10,063020(2008)).Indeed,wegetaΔGofca.0.05eVfor1T-MoS2of1/8HcoverageusingHSE,whichismuchdifferentfromtheexperimentalonsetoverpotentialof0.187V.UsingB3LYP,anotherpopularhybridfunctional,wegetaΔGofca.0.15eV,muchclosertotheexperimentalresult.However,thestructuralparameterpredictionusingB3LYPisnotgood(NewJ.Phys.10,063020(2008)).ThismeansthatincludingtheHartree-Fockexchangecanonlyimprovesomepropertiesbutworsensothers.Interestingly,thecalculatedB3LYPelectronaffinityoftheunstrained1T-MoS2(1.325eV)agreesalsowellwiththePBEresult(1.321eV,asshowninFig.3),indicatingthatthePBEelectronaffinitiesarereliable.Inoverall,theGGA-levelPBEfunctionalgivesquitereason
