Sonowtheimpliedmeaningofthepoemhasbeenspokenout.Andthe“Robin'sexpectation”isthekeytowhollyunderstandwhatthepoetwastalkingabout.First,thereissomebasicknowledgeaboutthelittlecreature.Robinisasmallinsectivorouspasserinebirdthatisaround12.5-14.0cminlength,themaleandfemalearesimilarincoloration,witharedbreastandfacelinedwithgrey,brownupperpartsandawhitishbelly.Therobinhasfluting,warblingsonginthebreedingseason.Itisrelativelyunafraidofpeopleandlikestocomeclosewhenanyoneisdiggingthesoil,inordertolookoutforearthwormsandotherfoodfreshlyturnedup.Indeed,therobinisconsideredtobeagardener'sfriendandforvariousfolklorereasonstherobinwouldneverbeharmed.
Whatsmore,robinwasheldtobeastorm-cloudbirdandsacredtoThor,thegodofthunder,inNorsemythology.Morerecently,ithasbecomestronglyassociatedwithChristmas,takingastarringroleonmanyaChristmascardsincethemid19thcentury.TheassociationwithChristmasprobablyarisesfromthefactthatpostmeninVictorianBritainworereduniformsandwerenicknamed“Robin”;therobinfeaturedontheChristmascardisanemblemofthepostmandeliveringthecard.
Inthe1960s,inavotepublishedbyTheTimesnewspaper,therobinwasadoptedastheunofficialnationalbirdoftheUK,representingthesturdyandbraveEnglandspirit.
Sothe“Robin'sexpectation”indicatedthatthepoetisverystronginmind.Shewoulddowhatshethoughtright,withoutbeingdisturbedbyotherpeople.Sheisthebirdwithsmallbodybuthasgreatexpectations.“Morning—onlytheseedofNoon–”indicatesthatthisisonlythebeginning.AndwhentheChristmascomes,alltheotherbirdswerestoppedsinging,therobin,orthepoet,willpersistinsinging.So“I”withmydistinctiveredbreastandmyownrhythmwillfinallybeheardbytheentireworld.Thisisthepoetsexpectation,ortherobinsexpectationinthepoem.AndDickinsonhasalreadyachievedhergoalafterdecadesofherdeath.
