Efficiencyisalsoagreatwaytolowercarbonemissionsandhelpslowglobalwarming.But

thebestargumentforefficiencyisitscost-or,moreprecisely,itsprofitability.That'sbecause

quicklygrowingenergydemandrequiresimmenseinvestmentinnewsupply,nottomentionthe

drainofrisingenergyprices.

Nowonderefficiencyhasmovedtothetopofthepoliticalagenda.OnJan.10,theEuropean

Unionunveiledaplantocutenergyuseacrossthecontinentby20percentby2021.LastMarch,

Chinaimposeda20percentincreaseinenergyefficiencyby2021.EvenGreorgeW.Bush,the

Texasoilman,isexpectedtotalkaboutenergyconservationinhisStateoftheUnionspeechthis

week.

Thegoodnewsisthattheworldisfullofproven,cheapwaystosaveenergy.Herearethe

seventhatcouldhavethebiggestimpact:

Insulate

Spaceheatingandcoolingeatsup36percentofalltheworld'senergy.There\virtuallyno

limittohowmuchofthatcanbesaved,asprototype“zero-energyhomes"inSwitzerlandand

Germanyhaveshown.There'sbeenasurgeinnewwaysofkeepingheatinandcoldout(orvice

versa).Themostadvancedinsulationfollowsthelawofincreasingreturns:ifyouaddenough,

youcanscaledownoreveneliminateheatingandair-conditioningequipment,loweringcostseven

beforeyoustartsavingonutilitybills.Studieshaveshownthatgreenworkplaces(onesthatdon't

constantlyneedtohavetheheatorair-conditionerrunning)havehigherworkerproductivityand

lowersickrates.

ChangeBulbs

Lightingeatsup20percentoftheworld'selectricity,ortheequivalentofroughly600,000

tonsofcoaladay.Fortypercentofthatpowersold-fashionedincandescentlightbulbs一a

19th-centurytechnologythatwastesmostofthepoweritconsumesonunwantedheat.

Compactfluorescentlamps,orCFLs,notonlyuse75to80percentlesselectricitythan

incandescentbulbstogeneratethesameamountoflight,buttheyalsolast10timeslonger.

Phasingoldbulbsoutby2030wouldsavetheoutputof650powerplantsandavoidthereleaseof
