the"bible"ofcricket.BeckettstudiedFrench,Italian,andEnglishatTrinityCollege,Dublinfrom1923to1927(oneofhistutorswastheeminentwaitingforgodot等待戈多BiographyIn1929,Beckettpublishedhisfirstwork,acriticalessay

entitled"Dante...Bruno.Vico..Joyce"..In1930,BeckettreturnedtoTrinityCollegeasalecturer.InNovember1930,hepresentedapaperinFrenchtotheModernLanguagesSocietyofTrinityontheToulousepoetJeanduChas,founderofamovementcalled

leConcentrisme.Aliteraryparody,ConfinedtoanursinghomeandsufferingfromemphysemaandpossiblyParkinson'sdisease,Beckettdiedon22December.InJanuary1938inParis,Beckettwasstabbedinthechestandnearlykilledwhenherefusedthesolicitationsofanotoriouspimp(whowentbythenameofPrudent).JoycearrangedaprivateroomforBeckettatthehospital.Backwaitingforgodot等待戈多WaitingforGodot

isan

absurdist

playby

SamuelBeckett,inwhichtwocharacters,

Vladimir

and

Estragon,waitendlesslyandinvainforthearrivalofsomeonenamedGodot.

Godot'sabsence,aswellasnumerousotheraspectsoftheplay,haveledtomanydifferentinterpretationssincetheplay's1953premiere.Itwasvoted"themostsignificantEnglishlanguageplayofthe20thcentury".

WaitingforGodot

isBeckett'stranslationofhisownoriginalFrenchversion,

EnattendantGodot,andissubtitled(inEnglishonly)"a

tragicomedy

intwoacts".TheoriginalFrenchtextwascomposedbetween9October1948and29January1949.Thepremièrewason5January1953intheThéatredeBabylone,Paris.Theproductionwasdirectedby

RogerBlin,whoalsoplayedtheroleof

Pozzo.
