“Theyarepeopleinwhoselivesaslightfallofsnowisanevent.”EvenattheriskofappearingtothisfairandwittyreviewerasanotherMrWoodhouse,Imustinsistthatlastnight'sfallofsnowherewasanevent.Iwasnearlyasexcitedaboutitthismorningasthechildren,whomIfoundalllookingthroughthewindowatthemagicoutsideandtalkingawayasexcitedlyasifChristmashadsuddenlycomeroundagain.Thefactis,however,thatthesnowwasasstrangeandfascinatingtomeasitwastothem.Itisthefirstfallwehavehadherethiswinter,andlastyearIwasoutofthecountry,sweatinginahotclimate,duringthesnowyseason,sothatitreallydoesseemanagesinceIsawthegroundsofantasticallycarpeted.2Thefirstfallofsnowisnotonlyaneventbutitisamagicalevent.Yougotobedinonekindofworldandwakeuptofindyourselfinanotherquitedifferent,andifthisisnotmagic,thenwhereisittobefound?Theverysecrecyandquietnessofthethingmakesitmoremagical.3

WhenIgotupthismorningtheworldwasacoldplaceofdeadwhiteandpaleblues.Thelightthatcamethroughthewindowswasverystrange,anditmadethefamiliarbusinessofsplashingandshavingandbrushinganddressingverystrangetoo.Thenthesuncameout,andbythetimeIhadsatdowntobreakfastitwasshiningbravelyandflushingthesnowwithdelicatepinks.Thedining-roomwindowhadbeentransformedintoalovelyJapaneseprint.Thelittleplumtreeoutside,withthefaintlyflushedsnowliningitsbranchesandartfullydisposedalongitstrunk,stoodinfullsunlight.4Anhourortwolatereverythingwasacoldsparkleofwhiteandblue.Theworldhadcompletelychangedagain.ThelittleJapaneseprintshadalldisappeared.Ilookedoutofmystudywindow,overthegarden,thefield,tothelowhillsbeyond,andthegroundwentonandon,theskywasthickgrey,andallthetreessomanyblackandthreateningshapes.Therewasindeedsomethingcuriouslydisturbingaboutthewholeprospect.Itwasasifourkindlycountryside,closetotheveryheartofEngland,hadbeenturnedintoacruelgrassland.Atanymoment,itseemed,abodyofhorsemenmightbeseenbreakingoutfromtheblacktrees,somanyweaponsmightbeheardandsomedistantspotofsnowbereddened.Itwasthatkindoflandscape.5

接著太陽出來了,等到我坐下來吃早餐時(shí),太陽的光彩已是絢爛奪目,給雪地添了一抹柔和的粉紅色。
