I.Backgroundinformation

ThetextisadaptedfromthenovelwiththesametitlebyO.Henry.

2.Abouttheauthor

O.Henry(1862-1910),pseudonymofWilliamSydneyPorter,bornSept.11,

1862,Greensboro,N.C.,U.S.,diedJune5,1910,NewYork,N.Y.,isanAmerican

short-storywriter,whosetalesromanticizedthecommonplace-inparticularthelife

ofordinarypeopleinNewYorkCity.Hisstoriesexpressedtheeffectofcoincidence

oncharacterthroughhumor,grimorirony,andoftenhadsurpriseendings,adevice

thatbecameidentifiedwithhisnameandcosthimcriticalfavorwhenitsvoguehad

passed.

Porterattendedaschooltaughtbyhisaunt,thenclerkedinhisuncle'sdrugstore.

In1882hewenttoTexas,whereheworkedonaranch,inagenerallandoffice,and

laterastellerintheFirstNationalBankinAustin.Hebeganwritingsketchesatabout

thetimeofhismaiTiagetoAtholEstesin1887,andin1894hestartedahumorous

weekly,TheRollingStone.Whenthatventurefailed,PorterjoinedtheHouston

Postasreporter,columnist,andoccasionalcartoonist.

InFebruary1896hewasindictedforembezzlementofbankfunds.Friendsaided

hisflighttoHonduras.Newsofhiswife'sfatalillness,however,tookhimbackto

Austin,andlenientauthoritiesdidnotpresshiscaseuntilafterherdeath.When

convicted,Porterreceivedthelightestsentencepossible,andin1898heenteredthe

penitentiaryatColumbus,Ohio;hissentencewasshortenedtothreeyearsandthree

monthsforgoodbehavior.Asnightdruggistintheprisonhospital,hecouldwriteto

earnmoneyforsupportofhisdaughterMargaret.Hisstoriesofadventureinthe

southwestU.S.andCentralAmericawereimmediatelypopularwithmagazinereaders,

andwhenheemergedfromprisonW.S.PorterhadbecomeO.Henry.

In1902O.HenryarrivedinNewYork一his"BagdadontheSubway."From

December1903toJanuary1906heproducedastoryaweekfortheNewYorkWorld.

writingalsofbrmagazines.Hisfirstbook,CabbagesandKings(1904),depicted

fantasticcharactersagainstexoticHonduranbackgrounds.BothTheFour

Million(1906)andTheTrimmedLamp(1907)exploredthelivesofthemultitudeof

NewYorkintheirdailyroutinesandsearchingforromanceandadventure.Heartof

the(1907)presentedaccurateandfascinatingtalesoftheTexasrange.

3.About"TheCopandtheAnthem”

“TheCopandtheAnthem“isahumorousshortstorybyO.Henry.Itfirst

appearedinprintintheNewYorkWorldnewspaperinDecember1904andwas

republishedinthe1906anthologyTheFourMillion.Thestoryincludesseveral

oftheclassicelementsofanO.Henrystory,includingasettinginNewYorkCity,

anempatheticlookatthestateofmindofamemberofthelower

class,andanironicending.

Therehavebeenanumberofadaptationsofthestoryfbrfilmandtelevision.

ThestorywasadaptedtofilmasasegmentofO.Henry'sFullHouse(1952),directed

byHenryKoster,fromascreenplaybyLamarTrotti,starringCharles

Laughton,MarilynMonroeandDavidWayne.

"TheCopandtheAnthem^^inspiredanepisodeofTheRedSkeltonShowon

December21,1954,withSkelton's"FreddietheFreeloader^^character

astheprotagonist.Skeltonalsodidanotherenactmentofthisstoryforhisholiday

programofDecember23,1958.The1978animatedspecialThePinkPantherin:A

PinkChristmasalsoborrowspartofitsplotfromthestory.

II.Generalanalysisofthetext

Thestory'sprotagonistisahomelessmanwhoisknownonlyasSoapy.Itisthe

startofwinterandSoapyplanstospendtheentireseasoninside,awayfromthecold

streets.Soapydoesnotlikehostelsforthehomelesswhicharerunbycharitable

organizations.Forthatreason,heplansinsteadtogetarrestedfbrsomepettyoffense

andtoreceiveashortjailsentence.Soapyspendsadaytryingtogetarrestedand

failingateachattempt.Whenhepausesoutsideachurchandlistenstoahymn(the

“anthem“ofthestory'stitle),Soapyisremindedofbetterdaysinthepastandhopes

forabetterfuture.Hehasacompletechangeofheartanddecidestomakeamanof

himselfagain.However,apolicemancomesandarrestshimfornoreason.Thetext

roughlyfallsintothefollowingthreeparts:
