MemoReports

Thememoreportisthemostcommonandprevalenttypeoftechnicalwritingfoundinindustrytoday.Itisaninformalreportandisstrictlyaninternaltypeofcommunication.Thekeytowritingeffectivememoreportsisbrevityandsimplicity.

FormalReports

Formalreportsarethecomprehensivedocumentationofmajortechnicalprojects.Bythenatureoftheirscopeandimportance,theytendtobelonganddetailed.Theactualscopeandcomplexityofanyparticularformalreportwilldependonthesubstanceofthereportitself.Mostformalreportsareoutsidereportsfromonecompanytoanother.Theycovermanyofthesamesubjectsasinsidememo-reports.Theformatvariesgreatly,dependingonthecompany’sstandardsandthenatureofthereport.

Proposals

Aproposalisasellingdocumentthatadvocatesthepurchaseofacompany’sproductsorservices.Itcanalsocomefromwithinasinglecompanyandadvocatethepurchaseofequipmentorhiringofadditionalpersonnel.Proposalsfromonecompanytoanothergenerallytendtobelengthyandcomplex.Proposalsthataregeneratedwithinasinglecompanytendtobebriefandsimple.Ineithercase,thereaderswillbeprimarilymanagerial.

Ifaproposalissolicited,itwillbeamirrorofanRFP(requestforproposal).Iftheproposalisunsolicited,itwillreflectthethinkingofthefirmseekingthecontractanditsestimateofwhatthereceivingcompanyrequires.

Manuals

Technicalmanualisadocumentationofaprocessormechanismoracombinationofthetwo.Throughdocumentationinthemanual,theelementsofaprocessormechanismaredefinedanddescribed,andinstructionsforitsuseareprovided.Thisusecancoversuchthingsasoperation,maintenance,servicing,andrepair.

Purpose:

Background:

About22yearsago,AcmepurchasedtheOtto24”laminatorcurrentlybeingusedattheMelvilleplant.

Thismachineusesthreesetsofhydrauliccylinders(2perpinchroll)toexert800psiasthelaminatedtopexitsthegluerandentersthepressarea.

Dependingonwhatsizethicknesstheoveralltopwillmeasure(1/4”,3/8”,1/2”,3/4”),youmustmanuallyadjusttheclevisendofthesecylinders.

Thisresultsinaset-uptimeofabout90minutes.Operatorcontrolsforthepinchrollersare“full-extend”or“full-extract”withnomiddlesetting.

Leaksinthisexistingsystemareaconstantproblem.Thepetroleumbasedoilattacksthegluethatholdsthelaminatetothebasewood.

Discussion:

Currenttechnologyinlaminatingmachinesusesmotor-drivenball-screwactuatorsinplaceofhydrauliccylinders.Thesemotorsuseaclosed-loopfeedbacksystemthatallowsforPLC(programmablelogiccontroller)basedcontrol.Consequently,set-uptimedecreasesfrom90minutesto5minutes.Becausetheseactuatorsaremotordriven,wecancompletelyeliminatethehydraulicsystem.

Currentwasmeasuredwithaclamp-onACampmeteronthe0-30Ascalesetting,withreadingsontheincomingBphaseofeachdrive.Agroundingconductorwasconnectedtothemotorframeoneachchassisandbuildinggroundconductor.Eachelectronicdrivewasstartedat0Hzandincreasedin1HzincrementsuntiltheampmeterreadFLA(FullLoadAmperage).Inthistest,theFLAwas21A.Individualcurrentreadingswerealsomadeateachmotor’sdesignedmaximumfrequency(172Hz).

Conclusions:

BrandCprovidedthebestperformance,withamaximumfrequencyof206Hzandaminimumcurrentdrawof18-7Aatthedesignedmaximumfrequencyof175Hz.

Recommendations:

Allfivestudent-trainingstationshavecomponentsthatleakedatthepointwherethebrassfittingsthreadintothesub-basesandmanifolds.Onfurtherexamination,Ifoundthatthesefittingsweremadewithouttheuseofsomesortofpipe-threadcompound.FourofthefivetrainingstationswereleakingfluidatthePlexiglascoversonthefrontofthereservoirs.

ActionsTaken:

Iremovedallthefittingsoneachtrainingstationandused3/8-inchtapetosealthefittingsinthesub-basesandmanifolds.Pressuretestsshowedthatallleaksweresealedwiththisaction.

Idrainedeachreservoirandremovedthecovertofindthatinallcases,the1-inchgasketsusedtosealthereservoirwallandthePlexiglascoverhadtorntheboltholesthatruntotheoutsideedge.Ihand-cutnewcovergasketsandhand-punchedtheboltholes.Afterinstallingthegasketsandcovers,Irefilledthereservoirsandtestedthemundernormaloperatingpressure.Allleakswerestopped.

Recommendations:

Teflontapemaynotbetheoptimumsolution.Wemustusepipe-threadjointcompound

onfuturetraining-stationmanufacturing.Wemustalsoconsiderthethermalexpansion

betweenthebrassfittingsandthesteelsub-bases.

WemustpurchaseaholepunchofcorrectsizeformakingtheboltholesinthePlexiglas

Covergasket.Asanalternative,wecouldpossiblyuseadrillpressandjigtopre-drilltheseholeswithaccuracyandcare.
