TheDragonGateisthemostphotographedsiteinSanFrancisco’sChinatown.ThegatewasdesignedbythreeChinese-Americanarchitectsin1967usingtraditionalChinesevillagegatesforinspiration.TheTinHowTempleistheoldestTaoisttempleinChinatown,andoneoftheoldestChinesetemplesintheUnitedStates.Thetemplewasbuiltin1852,butthendestroyedbythe1906earthquake.TheimageofthegoddessMazuwaspreserved,aswellaspartofthealtarandthebell.Thesewererelocatedtothetopfloorofabuildingconstructedonthesiteoftheoldtemple.

CulturalNotesTheBankofCantonisactuallytheoldChineseTelephoneExchange,atraditionalChinese-stylebuildingconstructedin1894.Whenthetelephonewasfirstintroduced,therewasnowaytodialanumber.Instead,youwouldhavetotalktoaswitchboardoperator(nearlyalwaysawoman),tellherthetelephonenumberofthepersonyouwantedtotalkto,andshewouldmanuallyconnectyoutothepersonyouwantedtocallusinganelectricplug.However,Chineseresidentsthoughtitwasimpolitetouseanumbertorefertoaperson,sotheswitchboardoperatorsinChinatownhadtoknowallthenamesandaddressesofeveryoneinChinatownsotheywouldknowwhotoconnectpeopleto.TheyalsohadtoknowfivedialectsofChineseandspeakEnglish.LikemanybuildingsinChinatown,theChineseTelephoneExchangewasdestroyedbythe1906earthquake,butitwasquicklyrebuilt.However,in1949itwasclosedwhendialtelephonesmadeswitchboardsunnecessary.TheBankofCantonboughtandrestoredthebuildingin1960.
