Historically,thecountryhasbeendominatedbywhite.Unlikemostotherpeoples,Americanareprimarilyanationofimmigrants.Thecitizensortheirancestorsimmigratedfrommanypartsoftheglobe.ThoughpeopleallshareacommonAmericanculture,thenationcontainsmanyracialandethnicsubcultureswiththeirowndistinctivecharacteristics.ThesedifferenceshavecontributedtoracialconflictsthathavebeenapersistentsocialproblemtoAmericansociety.TheoriginofracialproblemsThehistoryofracialproblemsTheslaveauctionThefirstblackswerebroughttoNorthAmericanin1619.Withinafewdecadesthedemandfortheircheaplaborledtoamassiveslavetradethatultimatelytransportedsome400000Africanstothiscontinent,wheretheyweresoldlikecattleatauctions.CivilWarTheEmancipationProclamation

TheNorthernstateshadalloutlawedslaveryby1830,buttheSouthernstatemaintainedtheinstitutionuntilitwasfinallyendedbythecivilwar,Lincoln’semancipationofslaveryin1863.The1960ssawthegreatcivilrightsmovementwhosegoalsweretoendsegregationlawscompletelyandfightforequalrightsforthecoloredpeople,afterthat,manyAmericanblacksbegantohaveanewmood.MartinLutherKingencouragedblackpeopletousenonviolentmeanstoachievetheirgoalsofequaltreatment.Finally,CongresspassedtheCivilRightsActof1964tostopdiscriminationinallpublicplaces.
