says.“Ittookseveralyearsofgooddata,publishinginscientificpeer-reviewedjournals,tochangepeople’sminds.”

Clevengernowhas17years-worthofdataprovingtheefficacyofthecrossings.Amonglargecarnivores,mortality(死亡)ratesare50to100percentloweralongsectionsofthehighwaywhereoverpassesandunderpassesexist.Inthosesamesections,mortalityratesforelkarealmostzero,comparedto100elk-vehiclecollisionsperyearinthemid-1990s.Clevenger’sresearchhasshownthat11speciesoflargemammalsinBanffhaveusedthestructuresmorethan200,000times,includingunexpectedspeciessuchasredfox,hoarymarmot,borealtoads,wolverines,lynx,gartersnakesandbeavers.

In2014,aMontanaStateUniversitystudyfoundthatnotonlyaregrizzlybearsusingthecrossingstructures,butthestructuresarealsohelpingtomaintaingeneticallyhealthypopulationsamongthebearsthatusethem.Grizzlieswerecrossingwithenoughfrequencytoensurepopulationsoneithersideofthehighwayweren’tgeneticallyisolatedfromeachother.
