TheveryexistenceoftheFremontdidnotcometolightuntilthelate1920s,

whenaHarvardUniversityexpeditiondiscoveredevidenceofanancient

peoplewhosettledalongtheFremontRiverinsouthernUtah.Farmersand

hunter-gathererswhoarrivedintheregionataboutA.D.400,theFremont

livedinone-roomhomesdugintotheearthandfinishedoffwithstacked-

stonewailsandroofsmadeofreedsandmud.Carbondatingofcorncobs

foundontheWilcoxranchhintthatRangeCreekwasbuzzingwithactivity

fromroughlyA.D.900to1100.

Butrightaroundthebeginningofthe14thcentury,somegreatshiftoccurred.

Thedrawings,potteryandstructuresparticulartotheFremontcultureceased

tobemadeanywhere.Someexpertsguessthatotherpeoplespushedoutthe

Fremont.OthersspeculatethatsomeclimaticeventforcedtheFremontto

Inafisherythathadforoveracenturyyieldedaquarter-milliontoncatches,

thereremainedabiomassoflessthan1700tonsandtheFisheriesDepartment

alsopredictedthat,evenwithanimmediaterecovery,stocksneedatleast15

yearsbeforetheywouldbehealthyenoughtowithstandpreviouslevelsof

fishing.
