Aboutthisbook:

ThisPhonicsLetteroftheWeekunithasbeendesignedtobeusedwithchildreninKindergarten(Prep).Itcontainsavarietyofgames,activitiesandworksheetsthatwillhelpteachcorrectletterformation,letteridentificationandrecognitionoflettersound.

ThepurposeofcreatingthePhonicsLetteroftheWeekseries,towhichthisunitbelongs,wasto

provideameansbywhichoneletterofthealphabetcouldbetaughtatatime.Agreatemphasisisplacedonlettersounds,whichmakesthisanidealtoolforteachingphonics.

Directionsforuse:

Beforeyoubegin...

Havethechildrensayoutloudthesoundofthelettereachtimetheyworkonatracingworksheet;thiswillreinforcetherelationshipbetweentheletterandthesounditmakes.Inadditiontothis,

childrenwillrememberthesoundsastheybegintoreadlateron,andthosethathavetroublewithreversals(suchastheletters"b"and"d"),willrememberthat“b”startsatthetopand“d”startsatthecircle.

Followingisanoutlineofwhatyouwillfindinthisbookandsuggestionsforimplementingthecontentinyourclassroomorhome.

1.Posterwithcorrectletterformation

Topreparetheposterforuse,print,laminateanddisplayonyourwall.

2.PosterwithCVCwords

Thisposterdisplays10CVCwordsthateitherbeginwithorcontaintheletterinfocus.Tosetup,printlaminateanddisplayonyourwallorincludeitinafile-folderwordwall.(Pleasenote:somevowelunitsdonotcontainCVCwordsordisplay10words).

3.Flashcardswithcorrectletterformation

Thesecardsdisplaycorrectletterformationforbothupperandlowercaseletters.Theycanbeusedasflashcards,tracingcardsorevendisplayedasposters.Topreparethecardsforuse,printthemout,laminatefordurabilityandthencutthemapart(optional).

4.Playdoughmatwithcorrectletterformation

Childrenwillhavelotsoffunusingplaydoughtoreproducethelettersonthemat!Theywilllearncorrectletterformationandbuilduptheirfinemotorskillsinpreparationforwriting.Tosetup,printandlaminate.(Cutinhalfifyouwantseparatecards).

5.Writeandwipecardswithcorrectletterformation

Childrencanpracticecorrectletterformationoverandoverwiththesecardsusingadry-erase(whiteboard)marker.Topreparethecardsforuse,print,laminateandcutout.Tokeepthecardstogether,makeaholeinthetoplefthandcornerandsecurewithakeyringorpipecleaner.

6.Writeandwipelettermat

ThismathasbeendesignedforuseinaWriteandWipecenterwithadry-erase(whiteboard)marker.Childrentracebothupperandlowercaseletters,awordthatbeginswiththefocusletterand5CVCwordsthatbeginwithorcontainthefocusletter.Toprepare,printandlaminate.

7.Vocabularycards

Thissetcontains18vocabularycardsthatbeginwiththefocusletterand9cardsthatcontainorendwithfocusletter.Thesecanbeusedas:

-vocabularyflashcards

-amatchingcardgame(forwhichyouwillneedtoprint2sets)Toprepareforuse,print,laminateandcutthecardsapart.

IhavealsoincludedaWritetheRoomactivityworksheet.Childrenwritedownasmanywordsthatbeginwiththefocusletterthattheycanseeintheroom.

8.SoundHoundcenteractivity

Set-Up:Print,laminateandcutoutthedogyouprefertouseandthepicturecards.Cutthedogdownthedottedlinestoseparatethehead,middleandtailsections.

Eachcarddisplaysapicturewiththefocusletteraboveit.Theaimisforchildrentoidentifythe

positionoftheletter(beginning/head;middle/tummyorend/tail)astheysayeachword,andplacethecardsunderthecorrespondingdogsection.Theythencompletetheaccompanyingworksheet.(Theworksheetcanalsobeusedindependentlyofthecenteractivity).

9.Build-a-sentence

Set-Up:Printthecontentsofthispageandlaminateitfordurability.Cutoutthesentencebase

(entirefistrow)andalongthedottedlinesofthepicturecardstoobtain8squares.Youmaystoretheseinalargezip-lockbag.

Theaimofthisgameistopracticereadingapredictablesentenceusingdifferentvocabularywordsthatbeginwiththefocusletter.Childrenchooseapicturecardfromthepileandplaceitoverthecolouredsquareonthesentenceframe,thenreadthesentenceoutloud.Ihaveincludeda

recordingsheetchildrentocompleteoncetheyfinishtheactivity.

10.Alphabetflipbook

Set-Up:Assemblyisrequired,eitherbyteacherorstudents.Youwillneedtocutaroundeach

rectanglebox,thenalongthedashedlinesofthebottomone.Makesurethatthetoprectangleisleftintactasitwillformthebasefortheflipbook!Arrangethewordcardsoneontopofthe

otherandstaplethemtothebase.Studentswillhavelotsoffunreadingtheirbooksoverandoveragaintofriendsandfamily!Ihaveincludedacoupleofrecordingsheetsforthisactivity.

11.Activityminibook

Afoldablemini-bookwithdifferentactivities:letteridentification,beginningsoundsandletter

tracing.Simplyfoldthepagevertically,downthemiddle,andthenhorizontallytocreatethebook.

12.Alphabetreader

Set-Up:Ihaveincluded2versionsofthisactivity:blackandwhiteandcoloured.Onceyouhaveselectedyourpreferredversion,print,theneitherteacherorstudentwillneedtocuteachpageinhalfandstapleonthelefthandmargintoformabook.Childrenpracticereadingapredictablesentencethatusesthemostcommonsightwordsandsimplewords(mostlyCVC)thatbeginwiththefocusletter.

13.Missinglettercutandpastereader

Set-Up:Onceprinted,placeeachpageontopofeachotherinorder,cutinhalfandstapletomake2booklets.Alsocutthelastpagesothatyouwillget3stripsof6letterpairs.Childrenarerequiredtocutthe6pairsapartandpasteoneoneachpageoftheirbooklet,andthenreadthesentenceonthepage.

14.Picturescramblecutandpastebooklet

Set-Up:Printthepages,stackthemontopofeachotherandcutinhalftoform2booklets.

Stapleeachone.Printtheendscrambledpicturetilesandleaveitasis-childrenwillcutthesetilesapartandusedthemtobuildthewordsinsidetheirbooklets.Onceallthewordshavebeenbuilt,

therighthandcolumnoneachpagemaybecompletedbycolouringtheword,tracingit,thenwritingit.

15.Lettermaze

Childrencompletethisworksheetbycolouringthesquaresthatcontainthefocusupperandlowercaseletters.Theaimistomakeapathwayfromoneendofthemazetotheother.

16.Fontdiscriminationmaze

Childrencompletethisworksheetbycolouringthecirclesthatcontaintheletterinfocus.Theaimistohelpchildrenrecognisethefocusletterwrittenindifferentfonts.

17.Hiddenletterworksheet(2pages)

Childrenrevealthehiddenletterbycolouringeachsectionusingthecoloursindicatedatthetopofthepage.
