universityandacceptingapositionatClemsonUniversityin2003,1keptintouchwithJames
Ransome.
In2005Ireceivedagrantfromthegovernmenttoconductafamily-literacyprogram.Iwanted
toseewhatwouldhappenwhenIexposedtenAfricanAmericanfamilieswithchildrentobooksby
andaboutAfricanAmericans.Iprovidedeachofthefamilieswithcopiesofsevenbooks,fiveof
whichwereillustratedbyJames.
Thefamiliesparticipatedinaseriesoffivemonthlyworkshops,andthefinaleventwasa
presentationbyJamesandanautographsessionwithhim.Ibelievedthiseventwouldbea
meaningfulwaytoendtheprogram,byhavingafamousillustratorofchildren'sliteraturecomeand
talkabouthiswork,especiallybecausethefamiliesandIhadreadandrespondedtoseveralofhis
booksoverthecourseofthefiveworkshops.
