MutianyuGreatWallhasalonghistoryandsplendidculture.IthasacertainpopularityandinfluenceinBeijingandeventhewholeafterthe20__OlympicGames,thepopularityandreputationintheworldhasbeeneffectivelyimproved.Itisprecipitousandrugged,likeagiantdragonflying.Itwasratedasoneofthe16scenicspotsinBeijingin1987,thetoptouristspotinBeijingin1992,4Ascenicspotin20__and5Ascenicspotin20__.

Mutianyuusedtobeasmallmountainvillage,locatedinbeixinyingtownship(nowBohaitown)ofHuairouCounty,wherethemountainsareundulatingandthetreesareluxuriant.TheGreatWallwindsfromsoutheasttonorthwestonthetopofthemountains.Becausethemountainisgentleandsteep,withalternatingcurvesandstraightlines,itisverythree-dimensional.DuetotheimportantgeographicallocationofMutianyu,itisknownas”WeilingXiongguan“.TheMutianyupasswasoneoftheimportantgatesthatsupportedthecapitalandimperialmausoleuminMingDynasty.Thereweremanywarshere.ThegreatwallofMutianyuisconnectedwithJuyongguanintheWestandGubeikouintheEast.ItistheeasternsectionofHuanghuaTown,thenorthgateofthecapital.IthasbeenknownasthenorthernbarrierofGongweicapitalandimperialmausoleumsinceancienttimes,andMutianyupassisoneoftheimportantgatessupportingthecapitalandimperialmausoleuminMingDynasty.

DuringtheNorthernQiDynasty(550-577AD),theGreatWallwasbuiltinMutianyu.IntheearlyMingDynasty,thegreatwallofMutianyuwasbuiltbyXuDa,ageneralunderZhuYuanzhang(whowasoncenamedZhongshanking,alsoknownasZhongshan),onthesiteofthegreatwalloftheNorthernQiDynasty.(accordingtotherecordsofQian'anCountyinthe12thyearofTongzhi:”intheearlyMingDynasty,XuZhongshanbuiltaborderwall,whichreachedMutianyufromthemountaincustomsintheWest.Itwasmorethan1700Li,andtheborderdefensewasdense.“

In1404ad(thesecondyearofYongleinMingDynasty),the”Mutianyupass“wasbuilt.(seepage1532466,Volume153,frontierbarrier,astudyofthepastandthefuture).

In1569(thethirdyearofLongqing),QiJiguang,afamousgeneralofemperorMuZongoftheMingDynasty,speciallyappointedtofightagainstJapaneseinvaders,ledthearmytorenovatethetwothousandliGreatWall,includingtheMutianyusection.Asof20__,theGreatWallpreservedinMutianyuisoneofthebestpreservedsitesofthegreatwalloftheMingDynasty.

MutianyuGreatWallismostlybuiltonthesteepsideofthecliff.Itisclosetothemountaintocontrolthedisaster.Thewallis78metershighandthetopofthewallis45meterswide.Themainbuildingmaterialisgranite,whichismajesticandsolid.Onbothsidesofthetopofthewallarebuiltlowwallcrenels,whichcanresisttheenemyonbothsides.Ontheoutside,therearehorseblockingpits,whichmakethedefensefunctionmoreperfect.Onbothsidesofthetopofthewallarecrenelsabout5feetlong,morethan1footthickandmorethan2feethigh.Bothsidesofthedoorareraisedalongtheridgeandturnoverwiththemountain.Thecrenelsintheseareasarenotrectangular,butserrated.Theshootingholeisbuiltbelowthecrenel.Itisnotaroundhole,butasquareholewithanarcatthetop.

Thereisalsoafortinthedangerousplace.Thereisalsoa”BranchCity“ontheGreatWall.Theso-called”Zhicheng“referstotheconstructionofasectionoftheGreatWallwithhighridgesandridgesontheinsideandoutsideoftheGreatWall.Thelengthofthesectionvariesfromseveralmeterstotensofmeters,andthereareenemytowersbuilthere.Thelocalpeoplecallit”DaoBaLou“.IntheMingDynasty,whentheMutianyuGreatWallwasrebuilt,crenelswereaddedonbothsidesofthetopofthewall,andatthesametime,rollingwoodstoneandThunderStoneholesweresetuptoattackanddefend.Theconstructionof”DaoBaLou“cancontrolthecommandingheightandreducethethreattothemaincity.Startingfromtheleftsideofzhengguantai,thegreatwallofMutianyuturnsoverwiththemountainsandrunstothedistance.

TheGreatWallstretchesstraightfromthemountainsidetothetopofthemountain.Aftersettingupanenemytoweronthetopofthemountain,itsuddenlydescends,turnsdowntothemountainside,andsuddenlyrisesagainuntilitreachesanaltitudeofmorethan940meters.Itmakesabigbend.Itsshapeissimilartothehornsofacow.Itisvigorousandpowerful.Peoplecallit”theedgeofthehornsofacow“.Thegreatwallextendsfrom”niujiaobian“toaplacecalled”Jiankou“.Hereisamountainwithanaltitudeof1044metersandsteepsides.WhenbuildingtheGreatWall,wemustpassthroughthecliffsoutsidethetopofthemountain,butwecan'tleavethiscommandingheightoutside.Obviously,wecan'tusebricks,stonesandwood.Sotheclevercraftsmenusedtwobigironbeamstosupportthecliff,andthenbuiltbricksandstonesonit.ThismethodisextremelyrareinthehistoryoftheconstructionoftheGreatWall.
