TheWintontookanearlylead.Buthalfwaythroughtherace,itbegantolose

power.Fordstartedtogain.Andneartheendoftherace,hetookthelead.Ford

wontheraceanddefeatedtheWinton.Hisnameappearedinnewspapersandhe

becamewellknownallovertheUnitedStates.Withinweeksoftherace,HenryFord

formedanewautomobilecompany.In1903,adoctorinDetroitboughtthefirstcar
