ThehardworkingblacksmithJonesusedtoworkalldayinhisshop

blacksmitheverydayandforhoursandhourshewouldenjoyhimself

watchinghowthetradesmanworked.

“Youngman,whydontyoutryyourhandtolearntomakeshoetacks,

evenifitisonlytopassthetime?”saidtheblacksmith."Whoknows,

oneday,itmaybeofusetoyou.〃

Thelazyboybegantoseewhathecoulddo.Butafteralittle

practicehefoundthathewasbecomingveryskilledandsoonhewas

makingsomeofthefinesttacks.

OldMr.Smithdiedandthesononaccountofthewarlostallhis

goods.Hehadtoleavehomeandwasforcedtotakeupresidencein

anothercountry.Itsohappenedthatinthisvillagetherewere

numerousshoemakerswhowerespendingalotofmoneytobuytacks

fortheirshoesandevenattimeswhentheypaidhighpricesthey

werenotalwaysabletogetwhattheywanted,becauseinthatpart

ofthecountrytherewasahighdemandforsoldiersshoes.

OuryoungMr.Smith,whowasfindingitdifficulttoearnhisdaily

bread,rememberedthatonceuponatimehehad

learnedtheartofmakingtacksandhadthesuddenideaofmaking

abargainwiththeshoemakers.Hetoldthemthathewouldmakethe

tacksiftheywouldhelptogethimsettledinhisworkshop.The

shoemakerswereonlytoogladoftheoffer.Andafterawhile,Mr.

Smithfoundthathewassoonmakingthefinesttacksinthevillage.

〃Howfunnyitseems,〃heusedtosay,“evenmakingtackscanbring

afortune.Mytradeismoreusefultomethanwereallmyformer

riches.〃

TheMostBeautifulFlower

TheparkbenchwasdesertedasIsatdowntoreadBeneaththelong,

stragglybranchesofanoldwillowtree.Disillusionedbylifewith

goodreasontofrown,Fortheworldwasintentondraggingmedown.

Andifthatwerentenoughtoruinmyday,Ayoungboyoutofbreath

approachedme,alltiredfromplay.Hestoodrightbeforemewith

hisheadtilteddownAndsaidwithgreatexcitement,“LookwhatI

Inhishandwasaflower,andwhatapitifulsight,Withitspetals

flowertohisnoseanddeclaredwithsurprise,〃Itsuresmellspretty

Theweedbeforemewasdyingordead.Notvibrantofcolors,orange,

yelloworred.ButIknewImusttakeit,orhemightneverleave.

SoIreachedfortheflower,andreplied,“JustwhatIneed.〃

Butinsteadofhimplacingtheflowerinmyhand,Hehelditmid-air

withoutreasonorplan.ItwasthenthatInoticedfortheveryfirst

time,thatweed-totingboycouldnotsee:hewasblind.

Iheardmyvoicequiver,tearsshonelikethesun.AsIthanked

himforpickingtheverybestone."Yourewelcome,〃hesmiled,and

thenranofftoplay,Unawareoftheimpacthedhadonmyday.

Isatthereandwonderedhowhemanagedtoseeaself-pityingwoman

beneathanoldwillowtree.Howdidheknowofmyself-indulged

plight?Perhapsfromhisheart,hedbeenblessedwithtruesight.

Throughtheeyesofablindchild,atlastIcouldsee,theproblem

wasnotwiththeworld;theproblemwasme.Andforallofthose

timesImyselfhadbeenblind,Ivowedtoseebeauty,ThenIheld

thatwiltedfloweruptomynoseandbreathedinthefragranceof

abeautifulroseAndsmiledasthatyoungboy,anotherweedinhis

handAbouttochangethelifeofanunsuspectingoldman.

NailintheFence

Thereoncewasalittleboywhohadabadtemper.HisFathergave

himabagofnailsandtoldhimthateverytimehelosthistemper,

hemusthammeranailintothebackofthefence.Thefirstdaythe

boyhaddriven37nailsintothefence.Overthenextfewweeks,

ashelearnedtocontrolhisanger,thenumberofnailshammereddaily

graduallydwindleddown.Hediscovereditwaseasiertoholdhis

temperthantodrivethosenailsintothefence.

Finallythedaycamewhentheboydidntlosehistemperatall.

Hetoldhisfatheraboutitandthefathersuggestedthattheboy

nowpulloutonenailforeachday
