初中生英語自主閱讀現狀、問題及對策研究——以中山市X中學為例的開題報告AbstractInrecentyears,EnglishautonomousreadinghasbecomeasignificantaspectofEnglishteachinginmiddleschools.However,manyproblemsexistinthecurrentsituationofEnglishautonomousreadingamongmiddleschoolstudents,whichneedtobeaddressedtoimprovestudents’Englishreadingproficiency.ThisresearchaimstoinvestigatethecurrentsituationofEnglishautonomousreadingamongmiddleschoolstudentsinXschoolinZhongshancity,analyzethechallengesfacedbystudentsintheprocessofEnglishautonomousreading,andproposefeasiblestrategiestoovercomethesechallenges.Thispaperwillcombinealiteraturereviewwithempiricalresearchsuchasaquestionnairesurvey,observation,andinterviewstoprovideinsightfulsuggestionsforimprovingEnglishautonomousreadingamongmiddleschoolstudents.IntroductionWiththerapiddevelopmentofglobalizationandinternationalexchanges,Englishhasbecomethemostwidelyusedlanguageintheworld.Asaresult,EnglisheducationinChineseschoolsisbecomingincreasinglyemphasized,especiallyinmiddleschools.ThemasteryofEnglishisnotonlyevaluatedbystudents’performanceindailyEnglishclassesbutalsodeterminedbytheirabilitytousethelanguagenaturallyandeffectivelyinreal-lifesituations,whichrequirescomprehensivelanguageskills,includingreading,writing,listening,andspeaking.Amongthefourlanguageskills,readingisconsideredasthemostfundamentalandimportantonesinceitisnotonlythefoundationofotherlanguageskillsbutalsoacriticaltoolforacquiringknowledgeandinformation.InChina,pre-designedtextbooksandclassroominstructionhavetraditionallybeentheprimarysourcesofstudents’Englishreadingpractices,resultinginlowmotivationandinadequatereadingskills.Inrecentyears,Englishautonomousreadinghasbeenwidelyrecognizedasaneffectiveapproachtopromotestudents’Englishreadingproficiency.Studentscanchoosereadingmaterialsbasedonpersonalinterestsandpreferences,whichnotonlyincreasesmotivationbutalsoenhancestheirreadingcomprehensionskills.Asaresult,manymiddleschoolsinChinahaveintegratedEnglishautonomousreadingintotheEnglishcurriculum.However,problemsremaininthecurrentsituationofEnglishautonomousreadinginmiddleschools,suchasthelackofeffectivereadingstrategies,lowmotivation,andinsufficientreadingtime.ResearchQuestions1.WhatisthecurrentsituationofEnglishautonomousreadingamongmiddleschoolstudentsinXschoolinZhongshancity?2.WhatarethechallengesfacedbymiddleschoolstudentsinEnglishautonomousreading?3.Whatstrategiescanbeproposedtoimprovestudents’Englishautonomousreadingproficiency?LiteratureReviewAutonomouslearningisaself-directedandself-controlledlearningprocessinwhichlearnerstaketheinitiativetomonitorandevaluatetheirlearningprogressandadjusttheirlearningstrategiesaccordingly(Benson,2001).Autonomouslanguagereadingisatypeoflearner-centeredteachingapproachthatemphasizesstudents’choicesofreadingmaterials,encouragesindependentthinkingandself-evaluation,andenhancesstudents’motivationandskillsdevelopment(Luo,2020).ManystudieshaveindicatedthatEnglishautonomousreadingcaneffectivelyimprovestudents’readingproficiencyintermsofreadingspeed,readingaccuracy,andreadingcomprehension(Lin&He,2019;Guo&Gao,2020).DespitethepotentialadvantagesofEnglishautonomousreading,therearealsomanychallengesfacingteachersandstudentsintheprocessofimplementingEnglishautonomousreadinginmiddleschools.Oneofthecriticalchallengesisthelackofeffectivereadingstrategies.JinandHan(2019)foundthatmanystudentsfeelhelplessandlostwhenfacingunfamiliarwordsorcomplexsentencestructuresinreadingmaterials,leadingtolowcomprehensionandconfidence.Therefore,itisnecessarytoteachstudentseffectivereadingstrategiessuchasskimming,scanning,predicting,monitoring,andsummarizingtoenhancereadingcomprehension.Anotherchallengeisthelackofmotivation.ManystudentsmayfeelboredordisinterestedinreadingEnglishmaterialsduetolanguagedifficultiesorlackofinterestinreadingmaterials.Kou(2020)suggeststhatteachersshouldencouragestudentstoreadEnglishmaterialsthatcombinetheirinterestsandlevelofEnglishproficiencyanddesigninterestingreadingtaskstostimulatestudents’curiosityandboosttheirintrinsicmotivationtolearn.MethodologyThisresearchwillusemixed-methodstoinvestigatethecurrentsituationandchallengesofEnglishautonomousreadingamongmiddleschoolstudentsinXschoolinZhongshancityandproposefeasiblestrategiestoimprovestudents’Englishautonomousreadingproficiency.Participants:TheparticipantsintheresearchwillbeGrade8andGrade9studentsatXschoolinZhongshancity.Datacollection:Thedatacollectionwillincludequestionnairesurveys,classroomobservation,andinterviews.Thequestionnairesurveyswillassessstudents’attitudestowardsEnglishautonomousreading,thetypesofreadingmaterials,andthefrequencyofreading.Theobservationwillrecordstudents’readingprocesses,readingcomprehensionlevels,andnotes-takingapproaches.Theinterviewwillexplorestudents’readingstrategiesandthechallengestheyfacedinEnglishautonomousreading.Dataanalysis:Thequantitativedatafromthequestionnairesurveyswillbeanalyzedusingdescriptivestatistics,suchasfrequencyandpercentage.Thequalitativedatacollectedfromobservationandinterviewswillbetranscribedandcodedtoidentifycommonthemesandpatterns.Thefindingswillbeanalyzedanddiscuss
