ThiswastheseasonforwhichmatureScottishstudent,DonaldMacdonald,waselectedPresident,havingallreadywonaBluein1986.Macdonaldre-appointedDanielTopolski(nowarenownedrowingjournalistandbroadcaster)asChiefCoach.

Partofthe1986/87squadatOxfordincludedAmericanChrisClark,nowacoachatanAmericanUniversity,andfourfellowUSinternationals.

Allegedly,asplitappearedinthesquadbetweentheAmericanquintet;allexperiencedandleadingoarsmen,andthoserowersclosesttoMacdonald.TheScot'sgroupwerehappytofollowTopolski'sregimewhilsttheotherswerenotsosure.

FollowingacontentiousseatracingtrialinJanuaryof1987,TopolskidecidedtomoveClarktothebow-sideofthebeat.Clarkdisagreed.Topolskiheldfirm.AsaresultClarkandhis"group"withinthesquaddecidednottorowandsoughtatakeover.
