Attheendofeachrosterperiod,thewardwiththeIowestabsencerate
wouldwintheprize.Strategy2:FlexiblefairrosteringWhere
possible,staffweregiventheopportunitytodeterminetheirworking
schedulewithinthelimitsofclinicalneeds.Strategy3:Individual
absenteeismandcounseIingEachmonth,managerswouldanaIyzethe
patternofabsenceofstaffwithexcessivesickleave(greaterthanten
daysperyearforfulI-timeempIoyees).Characteristicpatternsof
potentiaI'voluntaryabsenteeism''suchasabsencebeforeandafter

staffweregivenalargerdegreeofcontrolintheirrosters.Thisled
tosignificantimprovementsincommunicationbetweenmanagersandstaff.
AsimilareffectwasfoundfromtheimpIementationofthethirdstrategy.
Manyofthenurseshadnotrealizedtheimpacttheirbehaviorwashaving
ontheorganizationandtheircolIeaguesbuttherewereaIsostaffmembers
whofeltthattalkingtothemabouttheirabsenteeismwas''picking''
