WecanseethisconundruminFigure2.AlargegroupofprimarilyChinesevehiclemanufacturershasestablished

organizationsthatarecapableofrapidevolution.Intheirupcomingnext-

generationcentralizedvehicle

architectures,theyareheavilytargeting

verticalizationtoavoidanyfrictionwith

corporateboundaries.Inaddition,theyarealreadyinaphaseofoptimizationinordertomeettargetcosts,becausethisspeedisoftenachievedattheexpenseof

profitability.Thisrequiresefficiency

improvementsthroughoutthecontinuousdevelopmentcycle,forexample,with

regardtointegration,delivery,andtesting.

Someprojectionssuggestthat

manufacturersinvestingherewillachievea26%costbenefitintermsofsoftware

R&Dspendinginanareawhereoverall

budgetspendingislikelytodouble[3,

FigureJ].Theapproachadoptedbythesemanufacturersistobuildtightlygroupednetworksofsuppliers,establishagile

developmentsetupsacrossdepartments

anddomains,andembraceafail-fast,fail-earlymindset.However,therewillbemorethanonekindofSDV.

IncomparisontotheSDVfrontrunners,

traditionalmanufacturersarestruggling.

Manystartedbyimitatingthenewcomersandplanningforatechnical“reset”oftheirvehiclearchitectures,whilealsocreatingdedicatedsoftwareorganizations.

However,thisapproachiscurrentlybeingre-evaluated.Overthepastfewyears,

theforecastsfornew-architecturevehicleshavecontinuouslybeenlowered.

Manufacturersareincreasinglyadoptingamulti-architecturalapproach,whichis

splitacrossmarketsandsegments(see

Figure4).Withanapproximately40%

marketshare,domain-centralizedarchi-

tectureswithtraditionalvaluestreams

continuetoplayasignificantrole.There-fore,theyneedtoprovidethesame

customer-perceivedfeaturesofanSDVtoremaincompetitive.Thereuseofsoftwaresolutionsacrossarchitecturesthatwe

deemcommerciallynecessaryrequiresarenovationofexistingdomain-centralizedsetups.Emergingfromthetroughof

disillusionmentleadstoanewstabilization

phase,albeitwithdivergingtechnologicalsolutionspaces.Sincemaintaining

multiplearchitecturescanbeprohibitive,collaborationsfortechnicalpartsthatcanbereusedbetweenarchitecturesare

crucial.Thesameappliestoscalingwithcomponentsdevelopedjointlybetweenmultiplemanufacturersandprovidedbyscalingtiers.

Cost-efficiencywillbeparamountforasustainablesoftware-definedvehicle

Wealreadyhintedthat,foragrowing

consumergroupintheemergingChinesemiddleclass,theoverallvehiclepriceisof

lowerrelevancethantheexperienceandprestigeonestandstogainfromowningaparticularcar.However,thereisalsoa

largecustomerbaseinmarketssuchas

theUS,Japan,andGermanyforwhich

priceremainsthemostimportantfactor

whenbuyingacar,followedcloselyby

productquality[1,5].AppealingtotheseconsumerswithanattractiveSDVofferingwillbevital,andthiscanbeimplementedinagradualtechnicalevolution.

Arecentattempttoclassifysoftware-

definedvehiclesclusterstechnical

solutionsusingasystemoffivelevelswithincreasingimplementationmaturityoftheSDVnorthstar[6].Aswehavewitnessed

fromsimilarclassifications,such

unidimensionalapproachesoftenfallshortincapturingtherealcomplexityofatopic.

Nevertheless,thissystemdepictsafairlycommonunderstandingoftherelevant

technicalneeds.ItshowsthatSDV

featuresrelatingtodynamicfunctionality,pay-per-use,andconnectivitymaybe

readilyimplementedthroughevolutionaryadjustmentswithinexistingdomain

boundaries.New,dynamicdesignsforthe

targethardwareareonlydeemed

necessaryinthehighestSDVlevels.

Acleardistinctionisrequiredbetween

areasofthevehiclearchitecturedrivenbycostoptimizationandthosewhere

standardizationanddifferentiation

dominate.UsingthedesignofzoneECUsasanexample,weseethatafurther

consolidationisbeneficial,forexample,withtheintegrationofmostpowerandcommunicationscomponents.Abest-fit

designoftheembeddedcomputing

capabilities,forexample,forthemotionorenergymanagement,willbedecidedhere.

Thedesignwillneedtoallowforthe

variationinthephysicalvehiclelayout

whilealsotakingscalingintoaccount.

Ultimately,theSDVwillonlybesuccessfulincombinationwithpartsthatarereusable

acrosssegmentsandregions.Industry

standardsandconsolidationintowell-

definedcoreelementsarekey.Thiswillallowchoicestobemadefromsolution

cataloguesfromdifferentsources.Open-sourcesolutionscanbeusedfor

applicationsotherthaninfotainmentonceprocessesandcommunitydevelopmentshaveevolvedtoapointofcontinuous

safetycertifiability.Duetothevery

differentpremisesoftheautomotive

softwaremarketwithfewcustomersandestablishedtraditionaldeliverypaths,

automotiveopensourcewillbeorganizeddifferentlythanbusinesssetupsinotherlessregulatedindustries.

Whenweconsiderthehighexpectations

placedontheSDV,itisapparentthatmostofthenewfeatureswillbeimplementedin

theconnectedhigh-computesystem.In

termsofhardware,standardizationwill

continuetofacilitatefurthercommodi-

tizationacrosscarlines,and,ultimately,

betweenmanufacturers.Withregardto

domaindesign,weexpectdriverassis-

tanceandinfotainmenttoremainlargelyseparatefromafunctionalperspective.

Nevertheless,costoptimizationpotentialexistsintheformofmechanicalsolutions,fusionofsystem-on-chips(SoCs),or

futurechipletintegrations.Toportmoreeasilybetweentheindividualelements,improvedhardwareabstraction,interfacestandardization,andbetterindustry-

standardframeworkswillbeessential.

Truecost-efficiencyisachievedwhenecosystemcontributorsfocusonend-customervalueandcollaboratefor

industry-widestandards.
