afewverbslike“sit”,“stand"and"walk”,butmy

teacherhadbeenwithmeseveralweeksbeforeIunderstood

thateverythinghasaname.

OnedaywhileIwasplayingwithmynewdoll,Miss

Sullivangavememyolddoll,too.Shethenspelled“dp-

IT”andtriedtomakemeunderstandthat"d-oT-l”

appliedtoboth.Earlierintheday,wehadastruggleover

thetwowords“nru-g"is“mug"and"w-a-Le-r”is

“water”,butIpersistedinmixingupthetwo.Ibecame

impatientand,seizingthenewdoll,Idasheditonthe

floor,breakingitintopieces.Iwasnotsorryaftermy

fitoftemper.Inthedark,stillworld,Thadnostrong

sentimentforanything.

Myteacherbroughtmemyhat,andIknewweweregoing

outintothewarmsunshine.Wewalkeddownthepathtothe

well-house.Someonewasdrawingwater,andmyteacher

placedmyhandunderthespout.Asthecoolstreamgushed

overonehand,shespelledintotheotherwordwater,first

slowly,thenrapidly.Istoodstill;mywholeattentionwas

fixeduponthemovementsofherfinger.SuddenlyIseemed

toremembersomethingIhadforgotten-athrillof

returningthought-andthemysteryoflanguagewas

tobefulloflife.ThatwasbecauseIsaweverythingwith

astrange,newsightthathadcometome.Onenteringthe

doorIrememberedthedollIhadbroken.Ifeltmywayto

thefragmentsandtriedinvaintoputthemtogether.Then

myeyesworefilledwithtears,forIrealizedwhatIhad

done,andforthefirsttimeIfeltsorry.

Ilearnedalotofnewwordstharday.Itwouldhave

beendifficulttofindahappierchildthanmewhenIlay

inmysmallbedthatnightandthoughtofthejoysthatday

hadbroughttome,andforthefirsttimeIlongedfora

newdaytocome.
