The evening before is known as Halloween. During the festival, poor people would beg for food and families would give them “soul cakes” in return for their promise to pray for the familys dead relatives.Halloween, however, has a special meaning for children today, who dress in funny or ghostly clothes and knock at neighborhood doors shouting “Trick or Treat!” Princesses,_ghosts_and_witches all hold bags open to catch the candies or cakes that the neighbors drop in.Today school dances and neighborhood parties called “block parties” are popular among the young people and old. They dress up as historical or political figures and go to costume parties. Teenagers enjoy costume dances at their schools and the more outrageous the costume is, the better it is.Certain tricks such as soaping car windows and knocking at the neighbors windows are expected. But parties and pranks are not the only things that Halloweeners enjoy doing. Some collect money to buy food and medicine for poor children around the world.Halloween originated as a celebration connected with evil spirits. Black is one of the traditional Halloween colors, probably because Halloween festivals and traditions took place at night. In the weeks before October 31, Americans decorate windows of houses and schools with silhouettes (輪廓) of witches and black cats.Pumpkins are also a symbol of Halloween. Carving pumpkins into some kinds of lanterns is a Halloween custom also dating back to Ireland. When the Irish brought their customs to the United States, they carved faces on pumpkins instead of turnips (蕪菁) because in the autumn they were more plentiful than turnips. Today the lanterns in the windows of a house on Halloween night let costumed children know that there are candies (糖果) waiting for them if they knock and say “Trick or Treat!”1“Princesses, ghosts and witches” in Paragraph 2 refer to _.Apeople existing in the imagination of children Bthe grownups dressing up to please childrenCthe children dressing up on this special holiday Dthe actors or actresses invited to celebrate the holiday 解析:選C推理判斷題。由短文第二段“Halloween, however, has a special meaning for children today, who dress in funny or ghostly clothes and knock at neighborhood doors shouting Trick or Treat!” 2Children celebrate Halloween in the following ways EXCEPT _.Aplaying little tricks on their neighborsBdressing up and attending costume partiesCdoing destructive things which are usually not allowed Ddoing some good deeds to help those in trouble解析:選C細(xì)節(jié)理解題。 C。3According to the passage, why did the Irish choose pumpkins instead of turnips?ABecause pumpkins were much cheaper.BBecause in the autumn there were more pumpkins.CBecause pumpkins were suitable to make lanterns.DBecause the Irish wanted to make some changes. 由最后一段的“.they carved faces on pumpkins instead of turnips (蕪菁) because in the autumn they were more plentiful than turnips.” B。4Whats the meaning of the underlined word “outrageous” in the third paragraph?AUnusual.BAttractive.CFunnyDExpensive. A。BThe people sitting around the fire are very strange. Some of them have huge noses. They have empty cheeks and large stupidly smiling mouths. Their faces are painted red, blue, and black; some are even green. They have antlers (鹿角) on their heads and long black horsehair hanging down their backs. Who can these people be?They are not nearly as frightening as they look. They are the Delaware celebrating their form of Thanksgiving, the Festival of the Corn Goddess. They are thanking her for the harvest and asking her to send them another good harvest next year. The faces are really masks, which are worn as part of the ceremony. In the past many Native American people made use of masks in ceremonies and celebrations. The masks varied from nation to nation, but they were most often used for religious reasons. When a nation was going to war, those going into battle would wear terrible masks to honor the god of war, whose totem (圖騰) was set up in the center of the camp. All the fighters would dance in front of it.Many of the masks still exist. They are made of many different materials, but the majority are of skillfully carved wood or of animal skins. Some masks were in the forms of birds and animals, but others were in human forms. They were painted in bright colors and covered with beautiful designs. Often these included symbols for the things the people depended on for their lives, such as rain, sunlight, plants, and fire.Sometimes, people wore masks to hide their faces from the enemy. Often, we, too, wear masks to hide our feelings because we are too proud or shy to show them to others. These are not the kind of masks worn on Halloween but are the facial expressions that we expect to cover our inner thoughts. Although these_masks do not look like those of the Native Americans, perhaps our reasons for wearing them are similar. 5At the beginning of the text, the author _.Adescribes an interesting sceneBshows the origin of ThanksgivingCtells how people celebrate ThanksgivingDintroduces the customs of the Native Americans解析:選A寫作手法題。 6What do we know about the masks worn by the Native Americans?AThey were mainly worn by soldiers.BThey were used for political reasons.CThey differed from one nation to another.DThey were worn to honor the god of war. 根據(jù)第三段的“The masks varied from nation to nation .”可知選C。7The fourth paragraph is mainly about _.Adifferent kinds of masksBwhat most masks are made ofCwhen and why people wear masksDthe things people depended on for their lives解析:選A段落大意題。 8What does the underlined part “these masks” in the last paragraph refer to?AMasks used to hide ourselves from the enemy.BMasks used to cover our true feelings.CMasks worn by ancient people.DMasks worn on Halloween. 此處的these masks就是上文提到的“the facial expressions that we expect to cover our inner thoughts”。. Think about what youve learned from a particular rumor experience, and let it help you make sure it never happens again.
