Course: Intensive Reading Class: Business English 046Contemporary College English Book IIIUnit One Your College YearsI. Objectives1. Consolidate those good habits formed by students: reading aloud the text by using the proper reading skills, answering the questions related to the text, summarizing the language points independently.2. Force students to deal with the pre-class work seriously, and learn to use reference book (eg. dictionary), paraphrase sentences independently, study the active words carefully.3. Improve students ability of translating the sentences from English to Chinese or from Chinese to English.II. FocusOn completion of this lesson students should be able to know clearly:1. The main idea of Text A Discovery of a Father: How a son learns to understand and appreciate his father when he grows up. The key language points in Text A: Word study (strike, remember, credit, cover, sympathize)2. Grammar focus: functions of participles (present $ past), past tenses, verb forms (comprehensive)3. Paraphrasing III. Teaching activities1. Recommended prior knowledgeA. Ask students to refer to the dictionary for getting the Chinese and English explanation of the unfamiliar words. Read them aloud.B. Do the Pre-class work II and answer the questions on Page 43 in order to catch the main idea and check students reading comprehension.2. Part One: Text delivery (4 hours)Step 1: take some 5 minutes to ask students to read the new words aloud after me to get them familiar with them.Step 2: Warming-up work (45-50 mins)A. Check Assignment 1 - Pre-class work II and answer the questions on Page 43.B. Background knowledge: about the author, some important notes on Page 36-37: Note 1,6,7,8,9C. Give a brief idea about the topic, structure, style and features of the text.Step 3: A careful explanation will be given. (3 hours)A. Some active or important words will be explaining by paraphrasing, giving some synonyms or antonyms to enhance students perception.B. Some difficult sentences will be grammatically analyzed, paraphrased, or translated if necessary. Line 1, Para. 1, Line2-3, Para. 4, Line 4, Para. 6, Line 1, Para. 11, Line 2-3, Para. 14, Line 2-3, Para. 24, Line 1, Para.33,Line 1, Para. 38. C. Summarize the text and some minutes are left for students to ask questions.D. 3 assignments will be given: Word recitation, reading the text aloud and oral work. 3. Part Two Extended activities: Check the assignments (2 hours) Assignment 2: ask 2 students to come to the blackboard to be dictated about the words. 20 words will be done. For the rest of the students, they have to write them down on a piece of paper (10 minutes or so)Assignment 3: dictate a passage, which is closely related to the text and chosen from the textbook (Para. 41, Page 35). It will be read 3 times. Check it with students and ask them to count the number of the mistakes. Single out those whose mistakes are less than 5 for praise.(15 minutes)Assignment 4: presentation and discussion (1.5 hours) Topic: The discovery of a fathermotherteacher 10 minutes given for students grouping in 8 parts to discuss together. Get to some of the groups and listen and take part in their discussions. Ask the selected reporter of each group to make a speech with a note recording the opinion of their members. Ask some questions to the reporters.Ask students to prepare for the exercises.4. Part Three Exercises (2 hours)Do the ex
