Should Life be Saved at the Cost of Others?Since ancient times, we have been educated with the belief that we should help those people in need, for it is a traditional virtue in China. However, this virtue also has been questioned, particular in recent years. People are pondering about these issues: Should life be saved at the cost of others? Is it worthy to do that etc. So, here, I would like to share some personal ideas with you all about this topic. From my perspective, the excellence of self-sacrifice is worthy for us to learn, but we should have “l(fā)ook-before-leap” spirit as to consider and reconsider whether we have that ability to save the people as well as protect ourselves. Life is precious and delicate. There is no doubt that we ought to lend out our helping hand in terms of others difficulties. It is not a problem of being worthy or not, instead, this behavior can manifest our humans gentleness and it attaches great importance to construction of a harmonious society. Whats more, we Chinese also have this kind of saying: Better save a life than build a seven-storied pagoda. That is to say, saving a life can bring us many benefits, such as mental comfort, fortune and aegis of the God. We are in an age where mutual help is a necessity because you dont know what terrible thing will happen to you the next minute! So be ready to help others and others will be willing to aid you. Yet have you ever considered your ability to save a person? Is it beyond your capacity? I suppose few of us can remain calm in those emergency circumstances. For instance, the moment one witnesses a person drowning, he will choose to jump into the water to save him by instinct without considering his ability and the situation (whether the water is deep or not). This is always the key cause to stir up the consequence of tragedy- the drowning people saved, he own dies or both of them die. So in order to avoid these tragedies again, we should also first think of our own ability, then try our best to help others rationally. For instance, calling other people for help is an alternative. It occurs to my mind a moving deed which happened in 1982. A college student named Zhanghua, in the Fourth Military Medical University of Xian, jumped into the septic tank to rescue an old farmer who accidentally fell into the pool, but unfortunately he lost his precious life. Zhanghuas behavior has been widely praised because he emulated the spirit of Leifeng and set a good example for us. Many years later, I have also come across another piece of news reporting that three university students died because of the saving of a drown child. They were all true heroes! But at the same time, there also arouse questions: should life be saved at the cost of others? or is it worthy to do that? From my perspective, it is a moral behavior regardless of the value and worth. It can not be estimated through any kind of style. It is this virtue that reflects the spirit of humanity and civilization of human society. Whats more, when the heroes try to save someone, they do not perceive the danger that lurks in the action, even if they sense it, the only thing in their mind is to help others. The question “Should life be saved at the cost of others” itself is a iffy one. Obviously, everyones life is as equal as others. The saying that saving other people at the expense of himself is not wise. However, it d
