I cant say that I enjoyed it, but it wwas an experience Ill never forget. I could never understand why there were s many things in the sales; where did they al come from ? Now I now the secret ! Firstly, there is the special winter sack and the stock that people buy all the year round.; some of these things are slightly reduced. Secondly, there are the summer clothes they couldnt sell last year; these are heavily reduced t clear them. Thirdly, there are cheap clothes bought in specially for the sales; these are put at high prices ten days before the sale begins and then are reduced by 60% in the sale. Clever! Lastly, , they buy in “ seconds”( clothes not in perfect condition) for the sale and they are sold very cheaply. When I arrived half an hour later opening on the first day of the sale, there was already queue around three sides of the building. This made me very nervous. When the big moment arrived to open the doors, the security guards, looking less confident than usual. Came up to them. Keys in hand. The moment they had unlocked the doors, they hid behind the doors for protection as the noisy crowd changed in. I couldnt believe my eyes; this wasnt shopping, it was a battlefield. One poor lady couldnt keep her feet and was knocked over by people pushing from behind. Clothes were flying in all directions as people searched for the sizes, colors and styles they wanted. Quarrels broke out. Mothers were using their small children to craw through peoples legs and get hold of things they couldnt get near themselves. Within minutes I had half a dozen people pushing under my nose., each wanting to be the first served. Where had the famous queue gone ? The whole day continued like that, but I kept my temper ! I was taking money hand over fist and began to realize why, twice a year, grahams happy to turn their expensive store into a battlefield like this. In the sale fever, people were spending money like water without thinking whether they needed what they were buying. As long as it was bargain it was OK. You wont believe this, but as soon as I got home I crashed out for four hours. Then I had dinner and went back to bed, feeling the sound of the alarm which would tell me to get ready for the second day of the sale. 56. What kind of clothes is likely to be sold 5%cheaper ? A. First, the radioactive material must travel from its form of production to the power station. Although the power stations themselves are strongly built, the containers used for the transport of the materials are not. Normally, only two methods of transport are in use, namely road or rail. Unfortunately, both of these may have an effect on the general public, since they are sure to pass near, or even though, heavily populated areas. Secondly, there is the problem of waste. All nuclear power stations produce waste that in most cases will remain radioactive for thousands of years. It s impossible to make these waste radioactive, and so they must be stored in one of the inconvenient ways that scientists have invented. For example, they may be buried under the ground, or dropped into deserted mines, or sunk in the sea. However, these methods do not solve the problem, since an earthquake could easily break the containers. Third, there may occur the danger of a leak(泄漏 or an explosion at the power station. As with the other two dangers, this is not very likely, so it does not provide a serious objection to the nuclear program. However, it can happen. Separately, these three types of dangers are not a great cause for worry. Taken together, though, the probability of disaster.(災(zāi)難)is extremely high. 61. Which of the following is FALSE ?A. It is possible that a leak or an explosion occurs at a power station. B. It is unusual for radioactive materials to be transported across land. C. But during a series of experiments Pasteur proved that tiny living organisms (微生物)caused food and drinks to go bad. I the case of wine and beer the organisms are already present in the form of the various yeasts (酵母) that caused the fermentation(發(fā)酵) process. Pasteur discovered that heating the wine gently fro a few minutes after it had fermented would kill off the yeast that was left in the wine. With the result that the wine would remain fresh for much longer. He also proved that food and drinks could be turned bad by other organisms that were present in the air and they too would keep fresh much longer if they were kept in airtight containers. The heating process was so successful that it made Pasteur famous. I t was named “pasteurization” in his honor., and by about 1990 it had been widely used fro processing and bottling cows milk. The result was a huge drop in the number of bottle-led babies dying from infant diarrhea(嬰兒腹瀉and from that time on it ahs been a standard treatment for milk and many other food products.
