They are not quite interested in learning English. Therefore, to stimulate their interests of learning English is our teaching purpose. The analysis of teaching materialsThis unit introduces and develops the theme of what is happiness to you. The reading material consists of an interview from a Tv programme. The host is interviewing a psychologist about happiness. Teaching aims1. Knowledge aimsa. Important words and phrasesInjure, struggle, disability, simply, psychologist, gymnast, gymnastics, tournament, junior, event, energetic, apart, devote, specialist, severe, injury, cheer, hopeless, overcome, adapt, positive, inspire, courage, admirable, rebuild, unbearable, In hospital, apart from, devote oneself to, cheer up, in good spirits, across the world.a. Important sentences1. While she was injured and in hospital, the world was amazed by the way she remained cheerful.2. Well, in case some of our viewers dont know her story,can you tell us a little bit about Sang Lan and who she is?3. By the time she competed in the gymnastics tournament at the New York Goodwill Games, 4. Her teammates described her as energetic, happy and hardworking.5. In 1998, could have cost her her future happiness.6. I know I will think about how she rebuilt her life whenever my life feel Unbearable.2.Ability aimsa. Discussion in groupsTeaching aidsBlackboard and the multimediaTeaching proceduresStep one: GreetingsGreet the class as usual.Step two: lead-in 1.Tell students that they are going to read an interview from a TV programme about happiness. Ask students how much information they know about Sang Lan. If possible, you can ask students to collect some relevant information before class. You may conduct the activity as follows: Firstly, we are going to look at several pictures on the screen. The students are asked to answer:(1) Can you name any famous people with disabilities you admire?What do they have in common?(2) How would you feel if you were injured?(3) How can we find happiness in life? Use the CAI, ppt.NO.6 However, today,we are going to talk about a special girl named Sang Lan, who used to be a successful gymnast. Can you search for more information about this girl?2. Ask students to exchange the background information about Sang Lan they have found with each other. Ask students to think about Sang Lans experiences and answer the following questions: Different people find happiness and fun in different things. There are certainly no criteria assessing which way of being happy is the best. Do you think Sang Lan had had a happy life before she was injured? Do you think Sang Lan has a happy life now? What would you do if you had the same problem? Encourage students to discusss freely their true feelings about Sang Lans story. 3. Ask students to think about the following question: Suppose you had a chance to talk face to face with Sang Lan, what would you like most to ask her about? The following are suggested answers: Childhood and school education Things or experiences that had left her the deepest impression before the accident Reasons for learning gymnastics Things that encourage her during hard times Current physical condition Expectations for future Future career plans Attitudes towards life, success and failure(The purpose of designing: The students are asked to improve their abilities of expressing themselves and organizing the language.)Step three: Fast reading Ask the students read the text as quickly as possible ,and then find the answers to Part A.1. What is the topic of the Tv interview? Happiness. 2. What is the name of the psychologist? Dr brain. 3. When and where was Sang lan born? In Ningbo,China in 1981.Say something about Sang Lang in different years.1981 born in Ningbo, China.1987 began learning gymnastics.1991 started winning competitions.1998 got injured at the Goodwill Games. Use the CAI, ppt.NO.8,10(The purpose of designing: Enable the students to read the text quickly and get a general idea of the text in order to develop the ability of getting lnformation.)Step four: Careful reading Read the text again and get a detailed lnformation of the whole text . And then complete the exercises of Parts C1 and C2.1.The topic of the Tv interview was the story of Sang Lan. 2.Dr Brain studies happines3.Sang Lan became a gymnast when she was eleven years old 4.Sang Lan was injuried in Chain in 1998, while practicing for the Goodwill Games. 5. Before her accident, Sang Lan s best event was the vault. 6. Sang Lan broke her legs and will never walk again. 7. Leonardo DiCaprio visited Sang Lan in the hospital. 8. Sang Lan believes doing no work keeps her happy. Help the students improve the abilities of reading and speaking.)Step five: SummaryFill the missing words in the blanks to complete the summary of the story about Sang Lan.( Sang Lan got to the Goodwill Games held in New York, she felt very happy. Some people say gymnastics is a dangerous sport, and only top athletes should be allowed to try the most difficult moves. Do you agree or disagree?2. Sang Lan tells people that to be happy, one must keep busy and think about positive things. Do you think this is a good way of finding happiness? Use the CAI, ppt.NO.31.33(Design intention: After careful reading, the teacher gives students a topic to have a discussion. The students should be encouraged to use what they have learnt in the text and their imagination to talk about the topic. In this way, their oral English can be improved.
