Status and function This lesson is a reading passage. It plays a very important part in the English teaching of this unit and in the whole senior middle school English, because we should lay particular emphasis on the students reading ability. It focuses on the students abilities to gather information; deal with information; solve problems and the abilities to think and express in English.2. Analysis of the studentsIn my class some students have known something about the topic, because they have talked about it in the previous period. But some long sentences are difficult for them to understand. They dont often use English to express themselves and communicate with others. Some students are not active in the class because they are afraid of making mistakes. So during the lesson, I arrange a variety of activities to let all of them join in to attract their interest and let them be confident and taste the joy of success.Teaching goals 1. Target languagea. Key vocabularyenergy, bean, cucumber, mushroom, lemon, mutton, roast, slim, curiosity, raw, lie, customer, muscle, cheese, protective, frustrated, drive, sugary, body-building, energy-giving,balanced diet, ought to, tired of, get away with, tell lies, be amazed at, do some researchb. Key sentenceSomething terrible must have happened if Li Chang was not coming to eat with him as he always did.He couldnt have Yong Hui getting away with telling people lies!2. Ability goals a. Develop the students reading ability by fast reading and intensive reading and let them learn different reading skills b. Enable students to talk about their eating.3. Learning ability goals Enable the students to learn how to talk about their eating.4. Emotional aims Stimulate the students sense to form a good healthy eating habit and develop the students sense of cooperative learning.Teaching important points How to improve the students reading ability. Teaching difficult points Understand the real meaning of healthy eating.Teaching theoriesWhen I deal with this lesson, Ill do my best to carry out the theories of the new curriculum-make the students the real masters in class while I, the teacher acts as director;combine the language structures with the language functions and let the students receive some moral education while they are learning the English language.Teaching methods a. Fast and careful reading to train the Ss reading ability.b. Asking-and-answering activity to check the Ss understanding of the text.c. Individual, pair or group work to finish each task.d. Discussion to let every student work in class and encourage them to have their own opinion.Teaching aids Ill make full of modern equipment such as the multi-media and tape recorder to make the class more lively and interesting. With the help of the computer and courseware, I think the efficiency of the class will be greatly improved.Teaching procedures & ways Step1.Lead-in Purpose: Arouse the students interest of study and bring in new subject.I will lead in the topic of the unit by showing the students some pictures about healthy eating and review the words of foods.T: Good afternoon, boys and girls. In my class, Ill divide you into four groups. If you raise your hand and answer the question correctly, your group can get one point. The group which gets the most points is the winner. The winner will have the right to ask anyone of us to sing a song, including me. Are you clear? Now, look at the screen. What are they doing? Step2. Warming Up Do you know that the food you eat helps you grow in different ways? Now, classify all these food according to their functions and fill in the form.”T: Please look at the slide show and discuss the questions with your partners. Then Ill ask you to report your work. Are you clear?Food that provides energy(eg. Energy-giving food)Food that helps grow bonesand muscles (eg. body-building food)Food that helps the body fight diseases (eg, protective food)rice, noodles, spaghetti, bread, potatoes, chocolate, butter, cream, oils, nutsmeat, eggs, cheese, milk, tofuMost vegetables (eg, beans, peas, cucumbers, eggplants, peppers, mushrooms, cabbages) and fruit (eg, apples, peaches, oranges, lemons)Step 3. Pre-reading 1. What do you think should go into a good meal?A good meal should contain some food from each of the three categories above.2Ask Ss to answer the following two questions.(1) What do people eat for breakfast? (2) How about for lunch and supper?Suggested Answers:(1) Breakfast: noodle, milk, butter, bread, egg, (2) Lunch and supper: rice / Chinese bread, meat, vegetable, egg.3. Look at the title of the reading passage and the pictures. Predict what the passage is about.Then read it quickly to see if you were right.Step 4 Reading Get the students to comprehend the passage quickly and accurately and meanwhile help the students to form a good habit of reading. Give the students a couple o f minutes to look through the whole passage. Tell the students to read the text silently and then ask for the main idea of the text on the slide show with their partners. Encourage the students to express their ideas.1. Fast readingLearning strategy: Skimming-do not read word by word, but read key sentences or paragraphs to improve your reading speed.In this part ask the students to read the text quickly for the first time and find out the main idea of the text. Then ask them to read the text again carefully to obtain some details. Before reading show the tasks and let the students read the tasks first. This text will help them have a good understanding of the text.a. The two restaurants supplied the healthy diet.b. The reason why Yong Huis restaurant was so popular with customers.c. Wang Peng found out why he had lost his customers and decided to win them backKey:c2. Careful readingT: Now it is time for us to read the text carefully and decide which sentences are true. Then correct the false ones. First read the sentences.1. Usually Wang Pengs restaurant was full of people. T2. Yong Hui could make people thin in two weeks by giving them a good diet. It would take longer than that. F3. Wang Pengs regular customers often became fat. T4. Yong Huis menu gave customers more emery-giving food. F No. it gave them protective food but no energy-giving or body-building food.5. Wang Pengs menu gave customers more protective food. F6. Wang Peng decided to compete with Yong Hui by copying her menu. FHe decided to advertise the benefits of his menu.By now, the students have had a further understanding of the text. The strength of the diet in Yong Huis restaurant was that it provided plenty of protective foodT:So what will happen if you only eat WangPengs/YongHuis diet?Maybe we will become too fat or too thin, and easily fall illness. We should eat a balanced diet.Step7.SummaryWang Peng felt frustrated in his empty restaurant because no eaters had come. He though his meal was good and his restaurant ought to be full of people, but people all went to a new restaurant. Curiosity drove him to go there. The hostess, Yong Hui gave him a menu and promised to help him lose weight in two weeks. But Wang Peng found there were only few choices including raw vegetables, fruit, and water. He couldnt have Yong Hui getting away with telling people lies!So he went to the library to do some research. He found that Yong Hui slimming(slim) foods served too little fat.
